Hey all,
I have a spare R50 hanging around that I thought would make a nice electric. Initially I was thinking of converting it to the E620 running 10s ... but to keep costs down I am now looking at doing a E550.
Any comments on motor / ESC / batteries? I was thinking of running 6s with the Z-power motor.

I used the TT motor on mine which is a Z30-1100 in drag plus the Ace 75A ESC. Using TP 5000 6S packs performance is pretty good for heavy sport flying, flights usually around 6-7 minutes using an 11T pinion, headspeed around 2130rpm.
It's now fitted in a Funkey 50 size Hughes 500E with 600mm blades, an R50 tail boom/belt and a 9T pinion, a 7 minute flight of scale flying plus the odd loop, roll and inverted flight(!) takes about 3700-3800mAh out of the packs.

I found the "A" model versions a little more efficient. Ran about 10 degrees cooler and slightly longer flight times. I can't say exactly how much longer as when I switched to the non "A" motor I also upped the headspeed.
The Raptor on 6 cells runs like a very strong .30 or maybe a strong .42-.45 engine. If you want .50 size performance, A123 cells in a 12-14 cell pack is pretty nice and low priced.

What are the dimensions of the battery area? I have some 6S batteries but they may not fit within the frames.

I keep my heli at work so I can't measure it right now, however the battery tray width is 48mm and I believe it's 65mm high at the back and 55? mm as it slopes up in the front. I made new side frames with a flat bottomed battery tray and made the opening under the main gear a larger rectangular area so I could slide brick packs in from the side. Best of both worlds for me, brick packs fit and I don't have to remove the canopy to change batteries.

I found that the TP5000 6S packs are a nice fit but my FP 4900 6S packs for my Trex 600E are too tall, as are the Kong Powers, Kong Power makes a special pack up for the E550/E620 which is a longer, lower pack.
