This is what we had before :( http://www.helifreak.com/about6382.html
Hello
These gears do not have the aluminum ring and seem like they would be more likely to split off the shaft. The reason for the aluminum ring is to keep the gear from spliting in half parallell to the shaft. The tooth width also looks like is is less than the grey gears which translates to a weaker gear tooth. I will stick with the grey ones from MA until these are tested by the top stick bangers. But I doubt they are better than the grey ones.

Looks like a PV0140 or PV0149 gear set to me

:) has sluggo been in the shop again with a 6 pack of good old Canadian brew
Those will probably work, though because I was one of the guys to do a lot of the testing on the open gearbox setup I can tell you that I highly doubt they will be an improvement. That said, this is a hobby and it is fun to try new things from time to time. A good test would be to drag them on the ground in idle up or maybe a good old fashion high speed ripper. You know why they call it a ripper right
There is definitely a reason the MA gears are what they are. The reason is a heck of a lot of testing. Lots of problems came up along the way and a lot of different things where tried. After everything was complete Tim made a final decision based on the info we had after testing.
With that said, will there be broken gears out there? The answer is heck ya. For several reasons the new box is much better than the old one. Easy to work on, very easy to inspect and see if things are going wrong, it is much more efficient, and smoother running. The possible issues are that it is open and subject to FOD and the gears are plastic. If I get a year on a set of gears I will be very happy with my flying style. If they need to be changed sooner, I know from experience it is about a 20 min job.
What can cause them to break, well lots of things. I have seen one box that we found 1 tooth missing. That box was flown for 3-4 flights after just to see what would happen. Surprisingly it held up fine. I saw another where the tail blades hit the ground hard and the gears stripped. I personally drug them for about 10 feet on an auto yesterday and they still look fine. No two situations will probably be the same.
Anyway, now that people know they need re-meshed after the first flight or two I don't think we will see too many more problems. So far the problem we saw with David's and H.C.'s gears seemed to be mesh issues and where growing pains of a new part. We will know for sure after some more time has been put on the boxes, but we are now in the middle of the flying season and I have heard very few complaints. Probably in fact 5-10% of the complaints I use to hear about the old metal gear box.
take it easy,

It can happen to anyone, for a lot of different reasons.
