Hi,

does anyone know how far they are on the developers kit? They seem to be working on something big right now, haven't heard or seen an update for a longer time (isn't meant negative, means they are working on something, so for me thats real positive).

Or are there any other models in the making, they should be screwing around on a T-Rex 500 and a Logo 500 i think...

greetings Daniel

Last thing I heard they had Rex500 undergoing flight testing, and they were working on some kind of 3D model painting package.

There isn't a developers kit that I know of but I have a had emails direct from Phoenix that a paint package is in development. It will probably let you reskin the heli and add logos etc to the models but this will only be basic stuff I doubt very much that it will be a 3D modeling package allowing you to physically tweak the 3D mesh.

They seem to want to develop their own models and scenery which is a shame I think they are missing a BIG selling point by doing this. Every other SIM has some means of creating models, Reflex XTR has both a scenery and model program which although is flaky you can get some very good results.

I don't know why but Phoenix are not letting us create our own models unless they don't want a good SIM spoiled by poorly developed models.

Any Phoenix employees/developers want to add some input on what to expect ?

Cheers
Glenn

Well they have always been saying a developers Kit is on the way, but they seem to be doing other things before that. Not so worried about repainting, i don't really care how the canopy looks, rather have some new models and scenerys.

oh well, we will see

dont think you know what it takes to make a quality sim model ?
i would rather 50 decent models than 1000s of crap ones like with the other sims
every phoenix model is created by experts and has undergone hours of 3d modelling
and flight testing which makes them special - cant say that for those on rc-sim.de,
the model painter will be available soon

As somebody who makes 3d models I for one would really appreciate it if they would release the "PhoenixCreator Aircraft Development Kit" they said they were working on in 2006.

It will be interesting to see how long they can continue to release free models, perhaps it is only a matter of time before we see the first PhoenixRC add-on pack? Maybe they are concerned a develop kit would canabalise sales of any add-on packs? Sales of the sim will start to drop off at some point and they will need a way to bring in more revenue - major upgrade or add-ons ? seems to have worked ok for Realfight & AeroFly.

I'm quite happy with the quality models from Phoenix. I'd be willing to pay for an upgrade/expansion at some point, if it's substantial, knowing that I get to fly top notch models. That does not have to exclude an open editor, of course, but for me this is about quality over quantity.

yes.. i agree that 50 great models is better than 1000 crappy ones.. but in the end isn't it you yourself that can add and delete the models you like and dont like? I think they should let people make models. If they are bad, people wont use it but atleast its available. It isnt like if they allow people to make their own, you are forced to download and use them all.

Magic, I agree that an editor is a good thing, but seeing as Phoenix is most likely a company with limited resources they have to direct development in one way or another. Making a fully featured editor that's user friendly enough to let loose on the public is a lot of work and would take away resources for other developments. When it comes to scenery, at least they already cooperate with users to make new ones, which is better than nothing and ensures good quality too.

One possibility which is used with other simulators is to provide a tool for importing the graphic bits from a third party 3D drawing package, and to specify the physics of the model. Perhaps this is even how they currently do it in house.

If there had to be a choice, I'd prefer continued development of the sim itself and more professionally made models to a fully fledged model editor. But that's just me - maybe we'll have both eventually :)

i completely agree with you drjustice. Since they have limited resources right now, I would rather them spend time on updating versions and making models. I said what I did because it seemed like burnside was saying that a developers kit would be a bad idea all together because people would make bad models. I dont see how it could be anything but a plus because in the end it is up to the user to pick and choose what he wants or doesnt. However, it does seem like its been a while since any new models or updates came out from phoenix. Im sure it takes a lot of work and time tho, I just like new things lol. I hope they get a trex500 out soon.
