At your own risk, and the risk of anyone that happens to be around you when you're flying....

I would not put a DS821 in any Model I want to keep ... the output shafts brake to EZ :arggg:

I use them in my 600E and so does a couple of other guys in my club. They work fine.We are not doing any hard 3D flying but loops, rools, tic-tocs etc are fine with those servos.
I still haven't figured out what a lot of people have aginst them other than the "the top pilots don't use them so I won't either" syndrome.

Yeah they are supposed to be fine on the E, they fall apaort on the N due to the vibration. Even Spektrum say not to use them on a .50 size nitro.

It's nothing to do with the sort of flying you do, they fall apart even in the hover and I for one don't want that happening on my heli.

The outputs shafts break off. A few people had them break off fomr simple hand pressure.

I use them in 30 size and smaller electric heli (Hurricane 550), no larger.

Also JR/Spektrum recommends against using them in 50 sized nitro helis.

I've personally had Futaba and Hitec output shafts break off. I also do not know anyone personally that this DS821 failure has happened to. Granted, neither I nor anyone I know is using them on a glow powered heli.
I guess my point is that the only output shafts that I know of that won't break off are metal.

So, just how many people do you know that has had this happen to them. and I wonder if it was trully "simple hand pressure" that broke them.

This is what Horizon Hobby and JR has about it:

Tech Notes
The DS821 servo is a powerful, accurate sport digital servo recommended for RC airplane applications up to 1.20-size. For helicopters, the DS821 operates best with 30-size glow models, and up to 50-size electric. Loads and vibration in larger models may cause premature failure of the servo resulting in damage or injury to property and persons.

Important: Do not use liquid thread lock with the DS821 servo!

Do not use any form of liquid thread lock to secure the servo arm screw to the output shaft of the DS821 servo. Chemicals in these liquids react with the polycarbonate gear set causing the plastic to become brittle, fracturing the final output gear.

I haven't, but many reports of problems. Supposedly using the longer JR servo screws helps reinforce the shaft, and later servos may be a bit better.

But One report the guy just put light hand pressure on the arm and the shaft snapped off. WAY less than for any other servo.

I have a Balsa USA Northstar a water plank in a land fill now BEC i lost a Aileron outshaft on a DS821 all bec when landing on Water i used Flapperons and just the pull of the Flap broke the shaft on one side 10-15 feet up flaring for landing and it spun it  ... if you have luck with them use them ... i will stay away from them

I saw one shear an output shaft on a 46 size plank with regular control surfaces (not barn door ailerons) on the aileron, with one servo in each wing. The cost of a crash will excede the cost of decent servos.
