what is the advantages of the optional 9T or the 11T pinion gears

the 11 tooth will give you Higher headspeed, which will make the heli react to inputs much quicker and with more authority, this will be at a cost of flight time and is harder on your battery.

the 9 tooth will decrease headspeed making the heli a little less twitchy and will increase flight times.

One of the three local LHS tried to tell me that higher head speed meant more stable hovering. My BS Meter was on high alert after that statement.

If I remember correctly, on a Hiller head the cyclic works the paddles and the paddles leverage the blades. Higher head speed makes give the paddles more authority to move the blades. It only makes sense that the faster the head speed would make the heli more sensitive. I wouldn't mind slowing the head speed down on mine to tone it down a little. Now I just have to fine a 9 tooth pinion.

I crashed my 400 in idle up and did a lot of damage. now I run in normal mode but changed my power curve to 0, 60, 60, 60. which is now like idle up only a bit less responsive and the battery lasts longer. I also spread out the pitch curve in normal mode to make it more easy to practice hovering and basic menuvers. Hope this helps.

I think I'm going to look at the throttle and pitch curves that finless uses for the Trex 450. Actually, and I played around with this on the sim to verify, I setup the normal throttle curve 0, 40, 80, 90 100, with the pitch curve 40, 45, 50, 75, 100. Then I setup the idleup curves for throttle 100, 90, 80, 90, 100 and pitch 0, 25, 50, 75, 100. I can switch from normal to idleup in hover and nothing changes.

It looks like it will be a while before I can try it on the Blade. 2 degrees tonight, high tomorrow of 20. Looks like no flying weather for most of this week.

duckman,

I'm surprised you have enough head speed to get lift at 60% throttle.
What does your pitch curve look like.

Mike,

I'm currently using:
0-50-80-90-100 throttle
40-45-50-80-100 pitch
for Normal Mode.
It works well, but I need the extra head speed and pitch because I'm at extreme altitude.

I think duckman suggest 0-60-60-60-100 for a throttle curve. Right now my throttle curve is stock. Unfortunately, it's been cold and very windy of late, so actually flying the thing has been out of the question. The 0-50-80-90-100 curve might be the best way to go. It works pretty well with the electric helis on the sim.

What are you doing flying helis in Avon this time of year. Shouldn't you be skiing?

LOL

Yeah, squeezing it in between snowboard runs.

Actually, I have a warehouse to fly in and since I'm only able to hover it works.

Talk about cold and windy...and snowy...I don't think we'll see the ground here until about June.

I got in a flight test today and ran through 2 battery packs. It was supposed to be light winds, but ti was really 8-10 gusting to 12-15. The goal today was to get the blades tracking, play with the gyro setup and also play with the throttle and pitch curves.

I won't go into blade tracking except to say I got it really close. OK, I haven't dropped the coin and got a 401 and a 3400 servo yet, so I am playing with a DSP75 servo programmed as a tail rotor servo and the gyro switched to digital mode. I had a waggle at 64.5% gain with the ball in the 4th servo hole, so I changed it to the 3rd.. Bottom line, I still had a waggle at 66% gain. It was better at 64.5 and best at 63 - 63.5. I haven't decided which I like better. I only did hover today so I can't say how good the hold was.

Pitch and throttle curves: With the wind gusting, IMHO, the stock curve is a little light on power. It took bigger throttle/collective changes to hold altitude and I was chasing altitude a lot. So, I tried Wolfpackin's throttle curve: 0-50-80-90-100. That was way too sensitive for me. It was exciting though. Then I tried 0-40-60-85-100. That was better than stock and a lot less hectic than the previous curve.

Anyway, 2 battery packs, got it close to dialed in and nothing bent or broken. That's a good day.

That is indeed a good day...sweet.

I actually got to fly my B400 outside for the first time yesterday.
It was a balmy 38 degrees.
Boy that makes things easier, not having to worry about hitting things inside.
