View Full Version : ESC and gyro choices?

I've been rethinking my electronics some and have decided not to use the CC 85HV. I'm thinking about a Kontronix, but I'm a little confused on the two popular choices, the 80-6-18 and the 55-10-32. The 80 is capable of more amps and has a built-in BEC, but is less expensive than the 55. What am I missing here?
On the gyro. I have a BLS251 for a tail servo and was thinking about the DS760. Now I'm wondering if a GY401 would work just fine. We had an indoor flyin yesterday and a fellow had a TREX 600 that was using a GY401. They assemble heli's (mostly TREX 450's) as a side business as well as doing aerial photography. Their thinking is that the GY401 is as good as any of them. I have one in my TREX 450 and it does fine and was easy to set up. What makes the DS760 worth that much more than the GY401. I'm a long way away from hard 3D, if I ever get there.
Thanks.

The 55-10-32 is good for up to 10S - 45V and the 80-6-18 is only suitable for lower pack voltage, but not sure the exact numbers as i dont use one. As far as the gyro's go the 401's are and excellant gyro for there price and you wouldnt be dissapointed but i cant comment on the DS760.

I have not looked it up, will the BLS-251 work with the GY401? I am wondering because I am using the 9251/9256 setting in my V-Stabi and I think that is a different frame rate?

The BLS251 will not work with the 401 since the frame rate is different. Also, The Jazz 80-6-18 is rated for 6S (hence the middle number) and 80A. The BEC is 5V and rated for 4A. I used it on my Logo500 for a while but switched over to the CC BEC since I wanted to run at 6V (had a WR 5A BEC but it doesn't work with PCM). I really like the governor on the Jazz and I've had no problems with it.

Thanks for pointing that out guys. I saw several references claiming they were compatible. Futaba's website says the BLS251 is compatible with the GY601 and GY611 and doesn't mention the GY401. That would have been a bummer if I had found that out the hard way. I guess a DS760 is it. Now I just have to wait until someone gets them in stock.

It sounds like the gyros will be in stock this week.
As posted by Angelos on 1-22-08...
Fergus,
they will be dispatched to our dealers next week.

Are there any issues with the internal BEC on the 80-6-18 other than the 5V output?
Thanks.

Not that I found but if your running JR8717s on cyclic you probably don't want to use it because of the higher current draw. Also, it worked well with my PCM radio so I would think there are no interference problems.

I'm really happy with my DS760 - Helikraft have 4 in stock at the moment (http://www.helikraft.com/Spartan+RC/)

Thanks John. I don't think I'm in that big a hurry to pay an $80 premium on one, though. I also found some on eBay out of Hong Kong for a similar price.
