I've been told by some local Fury guys that when the grease stops coming out of my tail gearbox, to put more in.

Is that real?

After I've refilled it, in 30 seconds of flight, the grease isn't coming out any more. A big load of it comes out right away during the first flight and then it's clean for the rest of the day.

I refill it before the next flying day: Undo screw, remove bracket, reinsert screw, shoot grease in the other hole, remove screw, clean screw hole, clean screw, replace bracket, loctitie screw, replace screw.

This is a real pain.

Is this what everyone went through before the open gearbox? I can see why it had to be changed.

I'm using Mobil 1 Synthetic wheel bearing grease. It's a deep red color and kinda looks like blood coming out of the gearbox.

I also use wheel bearing grease(not red though).

I fill up the tail-box every 20 flight. The grease is coming out of the box the first two flights after refill. When I refill, I make sure that I fill it up, so all the old grease is coming out, and there is only new grease in the box.

But now, I'm waiting for Rick's to send me the Open Tail Box.

Hi Mark,

You might have noticed at Try City that one of my Ion’s still has the closed gear housing on it like yours, if it’s lucky it gets greased every 100 flights or so, it I forget then it has gone twice that far with no problems. I use plane old Valvoline wheel bearing grease I’ve had laying around for 15 years.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with this gear box assembly! It is very reliable and long lasting. When I build one, I set the gears so there notchy/tight and never go back in ever after that, just give it a squirt every hundred flights or so. I have put over 1200 flights on a single set of gears in an old plastic housing on a 98 Min Air SE flying 3D so even that worked great. The only reason for the new open housing/box, besides the fact that it’s cool is to survive a higher level of abuse, you are not abusing your machine so no worries :glasses:

notchy/tight

Yes, that's is what I did. I was totally surprised how ugly the mesh feels when the gears are dry. I didn't use the second shim because the spec config was already notchy and tight. After adding the grease, it smoothed out like magic. I still have no play in my whole tail drive system, but it's still young.
