FYI - setup recommendations for the open t/r transmission have been posted as follows:

There are a lot of TR mesh adjustments being made the Chattanooga FF this weekend as Tim is there supporting the fliers. ;)
I have not seen one failure there and there are plenty of TR's being dragged on the ground during CRAZY manuvers!

Thanks for the info Carey.

What type of shafts are being run, new pinned or new set screwed? I'm not so worried about the gears as I am the shaft.

pinned

are those shafts being replaced with the set screw ones ?

Set up procedures are great, thanks, Everyone should understand it now.

What about shafts? What is the recommendation? Should the new pinned shaft be swapped for the set screwed shaft as I3DM asked? Or is it safe to fly the new pinned shaft. Please don't give a "use your own judgement" answer. Is MA recommending the replacement?

Thanks,
Pete

Actually, my gear box was only sent from the factory a few days ago and it has pinned gears, this is for a Tempest though.

Pete,
I was talking to Tim this past weekend at the event. I believe the set screw gears and shaft are only going to be used in the gasser ( Spectra) kit tail gear boxes.
The only output shafts that have broken are on the gear boxes that are on the Spectra.
There has been no reported problems of out put shafts breaking on the open gear boxes on any of the glow powered or electric models.
I don't believe MA is going to make any type of change to the open gear box for the glow models. The only change they have done recently is the gears. The gears are grey in color that are now being used.

I have a Spectra with the new grey gears and new pinned shaft. So, do we fly the new pinned shaft on the Spectra or wait for the set screwed shaft.

Thanks,
Pete

I guess it would depend on how well the engine is running in the model. Gas motors when not tuned correctly create a lot more vibration than glow models.

I have seen a couple of the Spectra's fly that still have the original output shafts and also the black gears. One of them is John Garst's Spectra. John has let several pilots fly this model and he has had no problem other than the muffler coming loose. Now he seems to have that problem corrected with the SS header that was made for it.

I guess the decision to fly the model will have to be something you decide one way or the other. If the model was mine, I would fly it, but that is just my personal preference.

There will be a new t/r output shaft for the spectra ONLY, that the output gear (only the output gear) uses set screws instead of a roll pin.

This setup is still in development, however it will use the grey gears with a modified collar on the output gear only and is intended only for the Spectra (contrary to rumor the grey gears when properly meshed are holding up fine)

As best as anyone can tell, the few t/r output shaft failures that have been reported are in some way related to the running state of the motor. If the tail fin is smooth and flat in a hover (meaning that the engine is tuned properly), there shouldn't be any issue with the t/r output shaft. If there is clear and significant vibration on the tail of the helicopter, then the risk of having some sort of t/r related failure is higher.

When is this t/r output shaft aveilible?

Thanks

Why does your Spectra not fly? I have seen several of them flying here in the USA at events.

Are the new "old" pinned ones in stock? Part number?

Bent my shaft :? But due to my misstake. Not a production failure.
