I gave up on the BEAM ball links. Grabbed the extral Align ones and all is good. Using the JR7703D Gtro and a 9257 for rudder control. better paddles, better blades is all that was needed. Great heli flys like a dream. FYI. no other mods needed.

Havent done the tail mod yet mainly because the jig doesnt fit these grips so I have to do it by hand and have not had the time to do it yet.
The piro rate problem has nothing to do with the mod and everything to do with the gyro.

Bob

Just as an addition to what was said above, in mine the piro rate is incredibibly high. I have a hard time to follow the heli turn when full command is applied, so what is really holding the rate is indeed the gyro. On mine I have the GY-401.

I definitely agree with that !

ROne21,

Is that a MicroHeli tail servo mount for T-Rex? Thanks.

Well, I ordered my Beam and it'll be here this Monday!!!! This will be my second heli (first one is a Trex 500) and I chose a 450 size heli since I have 6 3s 2200 packs already. So far this is the electronics I have or plan on using:

Spartan 760 (as soon as someone gets them in stock)
Jazz 40
Scorpion -8 V2 or maybe a Neu motor???

I'm looking for suggestions on small metal gear digital servos and maybe some options with using a Neu motor. I think I read somewhere that some Neu motors won't work with Jazz controller but I'm unsure what the motors they are. Can't wait to get my hands on this heli!!!!

Alright, here's the setup I'm thinking of going with. Let me know what you all think.

Jazz40
NEU 1107H/2Y (I don't know if I need the 2.3 or 3.2 shaft????)
3s 2200mAh
CCBEC
Futaba S3156MG (Cyclic-does anyone have experience with this servo? What do you think of it)
JR D3400G
Spartan 760

I have not bought the motor, servos, or gyro yet. I'm still open to change for the motor and servos, but so far the specs looked pretty good for the ones I've listed. If there are any problems with the stuff I've listed please let me know. Thanks

Does anyone know where to find 11 or 12 tooth pinion gears?
Cant find them at advantage or RC hobby.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but it looks like my Trex 450 pinions fit the Beam just fine? (Though I haven't tried to fly it with one yet).

Well, I bought this kit last week, built over the holiday weekend, and maidened it tonight. Build went almost without a hitch, the only problem being one of my boom mount blocks had a defect in one of the taps for the long screw. I called Advantage today, and they are sending a new one, no questions asked.

Even with only one boom block clamped down, I felt I'd be OK to just hover around and do some easy circuits. Not much to report other than it flew just great. Had to tweak the trims a bit, and up'd the gain on the 401, but burnt through 2 packs no problem. It's definitely tighter than my 450, but it had 100's of flights, dozens of crashes, and has certainly been well "worked in"! :YeaBaby: I like the belt drive, it's quieter than the Trex too.

Thanks,
Jason

I'm gonna maiden this morning. I went for a 35X and a V2 -8 with a 14 tooth pinion.

How much is one of these worth guys?

I've got one, flown a handfull of times, half thinking of getting a new toy to play with.

All the origional kit, including blades and box, (blades new as i have set of radix on mine)
Set of Radix blades (installed)
Scorption 2221-8
Thunder power speed controller 40A (built in balancer)
3x hs65 servos.
CSM 630 + 9257
Spektrum 6100 receiver.

Oh yeah have some new spares in their bags, never opened, boom, main shafts, spindles.

Just curious, had a look at some second hand trexSE prices on ebay and they are nearly a give away.

I sold mine with hs65's, cc35 and an rct3800 motor for $350. It didnt have gyro, tail servo or rx.

I have sold many heli's, try to sell it as a package if it doesnt sell part it out. You will prob make more money if you do part it out!

Hi all,
I'm running the scorpion -6V2 with a 10 tooth pinion (Blade 400 pinion drilled out) and the gear noise is rather loud. Gear mesh is set correctly.
When I ran a 430L on a 13 tooth pinion gear noise wasn't as loud. I'm thinking it's due to the fact I'm running such a small pinion.

Anyone else experience this with a 10 tooth pinion?
Thanks.

Yep... it is because the pinon is small...

Hi,
I just purchased a Beam kit as well as a scorpion -8 and an a Scorpion 55 ESC from a member here. It is also coming with some HD 2216HB servos that I am not familiar with.
It is all nib.

What do you guys think about the 55 ESC? Will that work out all right. I just started flying helis this year. I jumped from a HoneyBee FP to a Swift 16 and have also picked up and been gently flying a JR Parkmite. I will want to set this up for mild performance initially....and maybe permantly.lol

I didnt see any posts about anyone trying a 3S A-123 pack..would that be OK for a learning to fly old guy?

Any help and advice appreciated.

Thanks,

Jimmy

The 55a scorpion is overkill for the -8 but it will be fine, it's a little bigger than other esc's but you can get it to fit. I suggest putting some flybar weights on. The Beam can be dialed down to be good sport flyer.
I haven't tried a123's but they should work fine.

Thanks,
it sure does look big. Ill look for some flybar weights because I definitly need to tame it down for a while,

I dont use A-123's in anything that I have now but have been wanting to try some. I am looking forward to building this heli and hope it goes smoothly with the help of Bobs video's.

Ill read back thru this thread and see if anyone posted a spare parts list. Im sure Ill be needing plenty of those!

Flew my Beam all day yesterday like 10 packs worth! LOVE IT... I put on a set of gorilla paddles and I liked it even better!

Do you think programmable paddles would help me tame down the quickness of the Beam while Im learning to fly it. I will get some flybar weights at the least and use expo for sure. I not to "quick" anymore.lol
Thanks

Yes absolutely! I first put them on with full weights... It made it a lot less twitchy and much like a Trex. Removing the weights made it still less twitchy but just as fast roll and flip rate wise.

Great, I just watched your video flying the programmable paddles. Believe me, I need all the help I can get in the flying department. \

I sure am having fun learning. Maybe this old dog can learn some new tricks.

I skipped the 325mm bladed helis and transitioned from a HoneyBee to a Swift 16. I can see it better.

Im ready to try the 450 class now and thought the Beam sounded like a quality product.

Where can I buy the pack with tail blades, paddles and gear????

thanks for the advice.

Sorry to ask so many questions..but..I was going to use a Logictech 2100/3100 combo or maybe an S3145 servo I already have on the tail but decided to get another GY 401. I ordered a Futaba S9257 rudder servo with it but it is a good bit larger than the 3100 or 3154. Is this OK?

Thanks

Hi All,

I am a newbie. I have a questions on Beam. What is the difference between the Scorpion motors for Beam. I have bought HK-2221-10 V2. However everyone is talking about -8 and -6. Should I change it to a -8? I am a beginner in Heli.

Scorpion HK-2221-10 V2 BL Motor
Scorpion HK-2221-8 V2 BL Motor
Scorpion HK-2221-6 V2 BL Motor

Akira.

I believe the main difference you'll notice is the lower kv rating on the motor.

-6: 4400kv, 52 Amp max, 525 Watt max
-8: 3595kv, 45 Amp max, 475 Watt max
-10: 3000kv, 42 Amp max, 440 Watt max

So your -10 will required a larger pinion to obtain the same head speed as the -8 or -6. It also has a lower power ceiling, so will be easier for you to bog. (exasperated by having a larger pinion too).

For "sport" flying, it's probably just fine. I fly the -8, and it does great for cranking around, and throwing in a few newb 3D attempts. The -10 will probably give you slightly longer flight times than even the -8.

You say you are a newbie, so I assume you are just learning hover and FF? I say give it a shot, it will probably be awhile before you'll need anything more powerfull. The -8 is plenty for me, and I've been flying a bit over a year now.

Good luck!
Jason
