I was thinking about getting that canopy but I also heard the paint wasnt that great. Since you say it isnt that bad I might just get one.. It does look pretty sweet!

Is the Orange/White/Black canopy still available? I don't see it listed on the Advantage site. I'd like to get one if I can find it.
Thanks,
JAy

Yeah, it's in a weird area, but it's listed and on their site. I had to search for it.
Here's the link for now:

I think that's an excellent reply from Barron at Beam. It takes balls to get on a public forum and address that type of situation. Manufacturers, distributors and people do in fact make mistakes. It's to bad that it happens but that's life.
It's not like it's a Kidney or a Heart Valve.
Barron, I commend you on your ability to perpetuate and cultivate cynosure by engaging the indwelling provisions of accountability, perspicacity, solicitude and sagacity.
And for Husky, I know what it's like to be on that side of the coin. I hope everything works out for you and that the Beam becomes one of your favorite machines and well worth the amount of time and effort you've put into building it.
Now let's have a big group hug and get back to the testing and evaluation data of the little bird.
With this kind of support I may have to build one myself.

Helibird, what did you use to do the tail mod? I do have the fireup jigs (like 3 of them).
I'm just wondering how you centered and balanced the drilling?

I have a friend who is a machinist and has the equipment to do it in his garage. He helped me out by doing it for me. Another friend of mine tried it with the jig and told me the jig doesn't work as well due to some minor differences in the arm.

Maybe we can get Fire to make a jig for the Beam if it becomes popular enough.

I will discuss with him after first flights.
Been filming like crazy yesterday and today. Going to be using the hitech 5000 gyro on this heli :)

Hey Jim with all the talk of the weight mod on the tail I found this on the otheRR site in the Beam forum. He claims it accomplishes the same thing and no drilling. He just used longer 2mm screws, balls for weights and locknuts. I may try this before I drill the grips. Anyway just thought it was worth throwing out there. Ray

I am pretty sure knowing and testing different weight that the added nut with the ball will be too much and actually reverse the effect which is worse than not have the mod.
Just my 2 cents.

I would also think that the nut on one side would cause it to be out of balance.
The centrifugal force back there at 10k rpm is incredible. The least little bit one way or another would be a significant difference.
I'm all about precision when it comes to things like that.
LOL That's why I like Bob's Videos. Picky and finicky. "Those are compliments BTW"

just as a side note, i figured that the beam would be a lot like my trex 450 se... its not. It feels better in the air. a bit more solid. not nearly as quirky as my old trex.
I imagine that a new trex would probably be better than my old one (it was originally an HDE but its converted to an SE essentially)
I really like the BEAM. Flies better, sounds better in the air too...
what pinion are you all using for the scorpion - 8 motor on 3S? I am using a 12t and its not as poppy as I'd like.

OK folks... I am pretty excited about this heli and got it last week. This is probably the only other 450 heli out there that I would say "it's a keeper"! This is based on seeing it fly and me checking it out at IRCHA. BUT until I get it flying this is just speculation. Still parts quality is high for sure!
I will finish my Logo500 build vids before I start on this but in the mean time thought I would give you all a teaser of whats in the box!
Special thanks to beamheliusa.com for offering me the chance to share this heli with you all. AND to Scorpion motors for helping me with a motor and ESC.
So here is the teaser.... Whats in the box!

Swash Plate Prep
OK folks it has come to my attention (Thanks Beamheliusa.com) that some swash plate balls can be tight. It is important you resolve this for a good flying Beam E4. THis is how I checked and did a SIMPLE mod!

Hi Bob,
Where have you posted your flight report?

Good deal, Bob! Thanks.
I have a comment on the tail boom install. I got mine installed with the slot or notch, towards the tail blades. The notch actually put the boom in the right 'orientation' as it slides through the tail control arm mount screw with the BEAM letterings ride side up. I don't know about everyone else but I prefer mine this way.

Doesnt really matter on this heli! You could have the beam writing upside down if you wanted to! Unlike other helis the slot in the boom doesnt lock into any tab nor does the tail case. Rotate the boom anyway you want.
Hi Bob,
Where have you posted your flight report?
As for flight report. read what I said.... I wont be doing full testing until this weekend! Stay tuned for the flight report.

Enjoyed this Beam kit! Just got finished with the sixeth flight and it gets better each flight. Rock solid hover and plunty of power.
HKII 2221-8, 45A ESC,GY401,S9650 and three HS65MG.
Bob, I did find tail slider needed to be quit a bit past center towards boom to center rudder trim before I engaged 401.
Hope your flight went well this week end. Look forward seeing it here.

Finished mine too! This would have been a perfect build with no real complaints if my kit wouldn't have been missing so many parts! :) Very easy build.
Hardware/bolt quality is nice. Standard 2mm cap screws are a nice feature and easy to find if you need any.
I used 285MG's on the head, and a 3400G on the tail. The link lengths were way off for the 285's The swash links had to be lengthened 4 turns, the swash to mixing arms another 4 turns, and the flybar cage to washout arms another 3 turns. Once that was done, everything was perfect! The swash was centered, along with all the mixing arms.
The tail servo brackets aren't all that great especially if you're using a 4 bolt hole servo, so I opted for a Micro Heli Tail Servo Mount from Heli Direct. It worked perfectly! It looks nice, like it should have been part of the kit.
One thing I really liked about the kit is the Rx tray. I installed my tray backwards so it left a little opening behind the tray. With that little opening I could take all the extra wire from my G770 gyro and sandwich them between the tray and the lower frame/landing skid, then bring the Rx connectors out from under the front and plug them into the Rx. SUPER CLEAN install. (see attached pic) No more extra wires hanging around!
I used Hyperion everything (Main Blades, Tail Blades, and Paddles). I've only hovered the heli in the house, but it feels super stable and blade tracking was dead on!
Overall, this is a super easy, high quality, clean, fun heli to build. Only thing I would change is the tail servo mount. And the BEAM should come with the painted canopy, even if they have to increase the price by a few bucks....the painted canopy finishes off this beautiful heli!

That's interesting, where did you buy the 12T pinion?
I think the kit only came with 14T and 16T? can not remember exactly to be honest,
Always thought my h/s was a little too high.

Now that's a clean setup. I'm using the same gyro, tail servo and as well as the same receiver but mine is mounted on top, above the gyro. Don't mind if I ask you for your settings in the future :).
I also have the Scorpion motor, -6, and I cannot get it to mount straight vertically. Although it is flushed on the mount, it is not straight up and down. It is leaning forward or back, can't remember at the moment which way it is leaning. I thought that maybe the motor mount is upside down but I double checked the manual and it is installed properly. Or maybe the pinion is not installed correctly? How many screws did you use? I could only use two screws to mount the motor. I'll post pics in a bit.

The motor does sit at a slight forward angle in relationship to the lower frame plate, as does the main shaft, that's the way the heli was designed. The important thing is the main shaft and motor are parallel. This heli has a somewhat aggressive look because it sits at a forward angle. If you notice the main shaft does not sit perpendicular to the ground or the lower frame, and the tail boom sits at an upward angle, but is perpendicular to the main shaft.
I'm using the -8 Scorpion. I only used 2 mounting screws (3x10mm), and used the 2 mounting holes that were closest to each other. Mine went in no problem, easy deal......

It just looks like it is leaning because of the swept look of the frames. If you look at how the pinion meshes with the main gear that is straight which is whats important.
