View Full Version : Why the short boom conversion?

Hi All,

I am a beginner in terms of helis, and other than the (surely negligable) reduction in weight, what is the point of the short tail conversion? I ask because my 550 came with the short boom, and I have now dented it so that I need replacement. I already have a long boom lying around so if there's no compelling reason to stay with the short boom I will use the long one from now.

Many thanks for any answers,

Kailee.

I think that the main reasons are down to balance and looks. Whilst the extra weight of the longer boom may be negligible you are moving the weight of the tail, fin, etc. further out which will give more leverage and make the heli more tail heavy. I personally think that the long tail looks wrong so I prefer the looks of the short tail.

If you do change to a longer boom, you'll also need the longer belt and longer rudder control rod. Or you could just cut down the length of the boom that you have.
