Lots of changes comming down the pipe. I would not buy one right now otherwise you will spend a fortune upgrading it when the new parts versions hit within the next couple of months.
On a performance scale of 1 - 10, the current version is a 4. Upgrade to a v2 head and get a new tail gear and you maybe move to a 5.
It is getting a complete overhaul. Read all the posts here about rotoworkz guys and the new frames, gears, and motor/pinion tests. The thing is sure to improve, but there is no set date as to when.
But, if you aren't concerned about 3D, this thing is as stable as it gets. It will hover and forward flight excellently. I guess its all about what you are looking for.
If you are a beginner, I would HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend this heli.
If you are experienced, looking to move up or just into the 500 class and want performance, wait for the new version or look elsewhere.
Just MHO, curious what others will chime in with. Don't ream me out too bad guys. Just being honest as I have experienced it.
I am talking about the 3D HDX 500 not the HDX 500 to different helis thanks for your help

I am only aware of a 3DX500 and a HDX500, not a combo of the two. All HDX's are 3D capable if that's what you mean.
the 3DHDX is not sold buy H.D. it is sold buy c and c hobbies in japan

Do you have a link where I can see it. I have no idea what it looks like. The fact that it is named the same probably means it is similar, but the 3DX and HDX have differences so a 3DHDX could be even more different.

Yea, that's the 3DX. I am sure it flies well. I have seen many posts where people prefer the HDX head.
I would suggest the HDX from HeliDirect over the 3DX just because of the R&D efforts HD is putting into it. Going forward you will have much better support and parts availability from HD on the HDX Line.
HDX and 3DX are all rebrands a mods of the same base. HDX is branching away from that and developing their own line of higher quality parts and frames. Again, check out the Rotorworkz posts within this forum talking about the new frame and gearing combinations. It will all become very clear.

the 3dx is also sold by helihobby, the 2 are identical except for some minor things as boom color.
The new version has been improved by Rotorworkz.
Upgrade to a v2 head and get a new tail gear and you maybe move to a 5.
I would reconsider that eval. once you actually do it and fly the finished product as a whole. Reason I say this is because all of the parts are not finished yet, some new things still being proto-typed.

I appoligize...I should have specifically said the current V2 head. I couldn't imagine the head won't be upgaded again. It still binds up and has limited travel. I could be wrong, but if they don't change the head, it still stays a 5 in my book for now. I think the frame and gearing will difinitely make a huge different, but without more travel on the current V2 head...this thing will never be "great".
It is all very confusing. It will be nice when the HDX lines can just go to HDX500 V-Complete or V - Final
Maybe a new name all together HDX500RZ or RWZ. Or on the lighter side HDX500NB (non-binding).
But, I am holding on and hanging on for the improvements. As soon as the frames are released and all the other fixins, I will slap em all on and I will either love it or ebay it. We shall see.

I satrated out with the HDX500SE and have since changed the head over to a 3DX500. The 3DX500 head is heaps more responsive than the original HDX500 head. I have no experience with the newer modded pieces for the HDX500.
Other than the head the 2 helis are very similar, but I am expecting great things to come for the HDX500 thanks to Charlies input. I have my heli shelved for the time being due to broken frames. I will be going to the RV version of the frame when they are available and swapping motors out to to go 8S.

AussieMick, how responsive would you say your 3DX head is? I have the new upgraded parts on my HDXSE head and still have binding. I took a dremel to the links to take off the jagged edges and give myself a little more room, but I still bind up at the corners. I find the flips are quite slow. It is a challenge to do a stationary flip or roll. It tends to exit the maneuver 5-10 feet from the starting point. I can add my evelator or Ail in, but if I go to far you can hear the links hitting the mixing arms and paddle holders.
How is the 3DX Head? Would you happen to know what parts are interchangable? Would an entire head assembly be needed?

Do you think this head is the 3DX head with a modified Flybar holder? It was brought to my attention the other day that the box ends are now v'd which give more travel. I am going to try to track down the 3dx head and look for similarities.

I would say my heli flips nearly as fast as my TRex450, I don't generally have to use all of the cyclic.
To change to a 3DX head you will need a new main block, see saw, Flybar cage, flybar and the 2 little arms that are screwed to the see saw, it is then a direct copy of the Lepton head.

The 3DX500 IS not the same as HDX500 SE/SAH/SAS ! The frame is alot different...motor on top. It's alot heavier too :( It also uses bell cranks...the SE/SAH/SAS have direct linkage to the servos. I've attached pic of frame.

Now this statement confuses me
My HDX500SE looks exactly like the picture except the cut out names on the side of the frames are HDX instead of 3DX. It also has bellcranks and not direct servo links - I bought it from Helidirect in Dec 2007 and it has the longer washouts , 68mm tail/13T etc

The "original" HDX500SE shares the same frame as the 3DX500. The only differneces that I know of is that the HDX500 has HDX cut into the frame and the 3DX has, you guessed it, 3DX cut in.

The heads differ but the rest is shared.
The HDX500 SA S/H versions have the direct servo to swash setup. As do the more recent SE models.

You are right: My 3DX500 just has 3DX500 instead of HDX500 in the frame. The other parts are the same instead of the head (3DX500 = Lepton head, HDX500 = T-Rex-style head).
Cheers,
John

I flew mine today with 2 3cell 2100s and for 2 minutes it was ridiculous. It was so crazy fast it was scary. The flips were snappy and rolls the same, Climb outs were out of this world...............and then we had to pry the huge puffy marshmellow batteries from the frame. For 2 minutes the thing was "great", but since it ate the batteries I will have to return to my 4 cells and let it lumber throught he air.
What kind of motor do you use on your heli? I flew my with two 2150mA, 25C, 11.1V in parallel, and I can get more than 5 mins. No flip yet, but crazy turns and figure 8 including crazy spinning. Just a little warm batteries after that (3.75V to 3.81V on all cells.) I used the Mighty Power 1130KV from our LHS with 24T pinion. I made myself a fan, and it helped to reduce the temp a lot.

I am using the 1050kv from HeliDirect. I have no idea what brand it is. It does have a built in fan. The motor was burning hot. I haven't flown it since, hopefully I didn't do any permanent damage.
