View Full Version : Noob needs help with 9303/9256 linkage setup

Hello.
I am brand new into helicopters (well, after a 25 year absence) and am trying to finish up a 600N build with 8717's, 611, 9303, 9256, etc. but I'm stuck on one thing and I thought I would pose this question to the masses before pinging the grand master (that would be Bob). I followed the build video for the tail setup to the letter so far, same tail servo, same wheel, same hole, same ball. I noticed that, after adjusting the ball link on the end of the long rod, he was able to get the rudder control to move the tail assembly just right, back and forth, with no buzzing (binding) on the servo. I did all that. But, when I move the rudder stick on the transmitter from left to right, I can't even get the stick to move halfway between center and full throw with the tail assembly throwing all the way, and the servo binding. And it's even, both ways. I bound the reciever correctly, created a new model, etc. Any tips on what I might be doing wrong would be greatly appreciated. Is it just a matter of moving the ball further towards the servo spindle to make up for the fact that I'm using a different transmitter? I've seen pictures of helis on here with the exact same setup as mine, so they obviously know something that I don't. What could it be?
Thanks!
:-D
Mike

1) Are you in rate mode?

2) Have you set the gyro limits"

1) Are you in rate mode?

I don't know what rate mode is.

I set the gyro gain to 0 (and all the other gyro function parameters) as per Bob's video. I'm not sure, but I thought that the implication was to not get the gyro involved at all until the mechanical linkages were correct.
The only difference between my setup and Finless's is the transmitter. He did mention that different transmitters might require moving the ball closer to the servo spindle. There are many experienced, helpful people on this forum, and I just thought I would check to see if anyone (with a 9303) experienced the same issue. Poor Bob gets bombarded with simple setup questions from too many people already, so I thought I'd throw the question out there first.
Thanks!
:-)

He called into Finless LIVE tonight.... we got it all figured out! I will let Mike explain it if he desires :)

Bob

As always, Bob made it crystal clear! :noteworthy

I'll explain after I have made the adjustments.

Okay, the short version is: I had not adjusted the Linkage Limit Settings in the gyro.
Bob said that the fact that my tail was traveling to the limit from only 1/2 stick was normal. What I needed to do was to go into the gyro and set the linkage limits so that the servo would not bind for both ends of complete stick travel. The numbers should be relatively close. If they are not, then we have to go back and adjust the ball link to get a better baseline mechanical center. Mine turned out to be 90 for the left and 94 for the right.
Thanks again Bob!! :noteworthy:noteworthy:noteworthy

Yes, you are correct. It's good also to keep in mind that a noob who doesn't know what rate mode is will most likely not know a gyro limit from a gyro gain from a gyro headache. Bob explained it in terms simple enough for even me to understand.
Having said that, you're the only one who responded - thanks!
