could anyone advise a beginner, I have bound my receiver and programmed the esc but now the receiver does not light up when I connect and there is no response when trying to use the transmitter. I returned the rx but the dealer says it is ok and lights up when he uses a battery pack. When I check the throttle connection to the rx I get 6 volts. Has anyone had a similar problem because I am badly in need of help!

Make sure you ALWAYS turn on the radio first and shut it off last. I have that same set and no prob. Hope this helps.

First thing to try is re binding. If it won't bind, it needs to be replaced. And unless your LHS had your Tx to try it with, it shouldn't have lit up, as it only does that when it links to the bound Tx.
You didn't happen to turn the Tx on with the bind button pushed after you bound? That will unbind the Rx.
Horizon prefers that you deal with them.

Sometimes mine doesn't connect, I don't know why. I'll turn on my Tx, then my Rx, the gyro will initialize, but nothing from the Rx. If I turn off the Rx and turn it back on, it usually works itself out. The other thing that sometimes happens is that I'll turn on the Tx, then the Rx, the gyro will initialize, and a bit later, the Rx will kick in. Sometimes it goes on immediately. I have no clue why it's different from time to time, but I've never had a problem after it connects.
I agree with Pinecone that you should try rebinding. When I bind, I hold the back button until the receiver gives a steady green light, even though the directions say you can release it sooner than that. Make sure you're following the directions exactly.
And, I hesitate to say it, but if your dealer tried it without your transmitter, isn't it possible that he binded it to his transmitter and it is no longer binded to yours? Just a thought. Also check your power supply - be sure your battery pack is fully charged when binding.

Linking can be delayed is the Tx is too close to the Rx (swamping) or if youare under a metal shade (multipath). Try setting your Tx down a couple of yards/meters away and not under or close to any large sheets of metal (cars, sun shades/roofs etc.)

Also, make sure the battery you are using on the RX is fully charged. Especially if you are using the pack that came with spektrum setup. If the voltage to the RX falls below a certain voltage it will do what you describe as well.

What else would you use for the Rx and why would you use something different??

I'm not saying you should use something else. Sorry, I reread what I wrote and I guess I made it sound like that. I'm saying that if the battery powering the RX falls below a certain voltage it will do that. So, check the voltage on your battery. If it hasn't been charged in a while, charge it and see if that give you different results.

"What else would you use for the Rx and why would you use something different?? "
(I don't know how to do a quote yet)
If you were flying a larger heli with digital servos, governor, etc, you might need a bigger power supply than the battery that came with the DX7. That would also depend on your flying style and how many flights you want to get before recharging. This is probably not an issue for the TRex 450, but in a larger heli, cranking hard 3D and getting multiple flights before recharging would require a more substantial battery to avoid a power drop that might cause the receiver to reboot in flight (not a good thing). I fly gentle figure eights with a roll here and there, and usually get two or three flights in before going home. My flights average five minutes or less, so I don't have the power concerns that others might have. I know that doesn't sound like much flying, but I only like to change my undershorts twice before calling it a day.
Hope this info helps!
