I have been flying for a while, first with a HB King II now with a trex 450 se v2, but I have yet to fly in idle up mode. I can fly all orientations well and hover pretty well nose in. I recently got Phoenix sim and have been flying preety much only in idle up on it. I am very good at landing and not bringing the bird down to hard. I have a DX7 radio and my pitch and throttle curves are set up per finless Bobs Vids.

Soooo.. Is the transition to idle up as easy as it is on the sim? Also, do most of you switch to idle up while in the air, or do you get the throttle to mid stick in normal mode and then switch to idle up? And when you land do you switch back to normal before landing or land then use throttle hold?

Thanks

I like to do it on the ground (so I do not forget) the first few times are going to be hard, because you are sweating it ;)

My thought is... if you idle up on the ground, with just a little negative pitch, the worse thing that can happen (if your radio is set up right) is that the helicopter will "squat" a little bit.

Also remember it is a "switch" and if something bad does happen remember to turn off the switch and fly it to the ground.

I just started using idle-up myself. I switch into it on the ground at mid stick. When I land I do so in idle up then spool down in normal. I found it a pretty easy transition. Like you I have always flown the sim in idle up so I was comfortable with it in real life.

If your normal and idle1 curves match at mid stick and above, when you flick into idle up, there won't be any RPM or pitch surprises.

What I do is spool up to mid-stick at 0 pitch, then flick into idle 1, then pick the heli off the ground. I land in idle up (usually with a hovering auto from about 4') and leave it in hold. As the heli spools down, I flick into normal mode and go to low stick on the collective. Hold stays on until I've disconnected the battery.
