View Full Version : Such thing as a "hot" motor?

Flew the recently rebuilt Logo 6003D for the first time today. This is the 10S/Neu 1912/H1Y 13 tooth pinion heli with Maniac 623s. First job was to tach it and set the gov speed. 70% seemed like a good starting place with a CC 85HV.

2,670 rpm, wow! And I thought that was mathmatically impossible. This motor has always been a beast, I am beginning to believe it's not "normal". Well I lowered the gov to a more reasonable 2,300 rpm and enjoyed the flights.

you tached this?

I only got a few flights on it before the big freeze, but...

I had a frend tach mine with same pinion etc and at 75% it was around 2230rpm.

Your headspeed seems abit crazy.

Many motor manufacturers have a +-5% tolerance on kv from batch to batch, so it has happen before that I needed a cetain teethcount on my pinion where my friends needed another.

Just put on a 12T.

Yea I agree Fredrick, his HS seems more like 15-20% diff though, lol. Maybe the CC at 70% is truly at 100% though? It has been awhile but I remember having to have the CC escs around 50-60% in most cases and sometimes lower to resemble what would typically be 70-75% on a Jazz esc, does that sound about right?

Remember to calibrate your headspeed in 80% fixed endpoints mode and then switch to gov mode and dial up the same headspeed, regardless of the throttle percentage.

Check out Finless' CC gov mode setup videos.

I have been flying this motor for months, and always forget it hs to be "throttled back". 12 tooth has been on order. Does the same with other ESCs, some don't like such a low gov setting.

Just curious.

The % number on CC escs are irrelevant as they are only headspeed adjusting numbers. I went through those thoughts myself extensively with Joe Ford himself. When I had my Ion my %s were actually around 39 and 45 for idle 1 and 2 which translated to 2000 and 2100 rpm on the head which in reality with that motor and gearing was around 75% of the total available Headspeed, which is what you want to aim for with a CC esc. Using fixed mode you should spool up to 75%, if at that % you are at desired HS then you are golden as a rule with those ESCs, if not then pinion up or down to acheive so.

If you have a Eagletree you can do a simple test.

Run the motor without connection to the maingear with a 3 cell battery.
Use the brushless RPM sensor, and record, then just take the RPM of the motor / volt.

Try that at 70%, 75% and 100% throttle curve.

Ive done that test a few times to see a fairly good est of motors kv, as well as finding out how a certain governor in the ESC does its RPM Range..

Beware, I got 2360rpm @ 75% fixed throttle. But set it at 2300rpm in gov mode, a bit below its sweet spot. However it peaked over 2500rpm often which I didn't find safe. So reduced further in gov mode to about 2150rpm with 2380rpm peaks. Don't think my CC85 liked it and got hot then died the other week.

Btw, earlier today I was informed that running my Eagletree at it's max frame rate of 10 samples per second picks up false peaks. And that it's better to run 5 fps or so. Will try that, hopefully that means my RPM wasn't as bad as I thought and 140A peaks false.

I normally try to run a higher amp ESC in my 10S 600, but I have to say the CC 85HV is working quite well in this heli. I have put about 20 flights on it, not even warm like the motor, gov is at 67.5%. I may wait to put the PJ back in.

BTW today was 70 degrees, sunny, no wind.
