So I went ahead and got the GY401, but I'm having problems getting the tail steady. I set it up according to the instructions at http://www.swashplate.co.uk/ehbg-v17/ch13s05.html in section 13.5.5.1.9. The tail continues to "wag" regardless of how much gain I have.

I set it to a very low gain level, and the tail is steady, but the slightest bit of input on the rudder causes the tail to swing out wildly (almost no gain). If I set it up a little more, it goes into a slow(ish) drift from one side to the other, up just a little bit more, and it gets "twitchy", and stays that way all the way up to 100% gain on the Tx (only about 50% on the gyro itself).

I have noticed that the tail motor sort of pulses (slows down momentarily and speeds up) whether in hh mode, or rate mode, regardless of rudder input or motor speed. (See http://youtube.com/watch?v=5yzA44CUlZU for another guy's example of this). Could this be the cause of my problem? Does this gyro just not jive with a tail motored heli? Is there something else wrong with my setup?

I've run the wire from the gyro close to the brushed motor, but there's absolutely no way to route it to the 3 in 1 and keep it away from the motor on this little heli.

So what do you guys think? Is it a limitation of a tail motored heli? Something wrong with my setup?
Should I increase the gain on the gyro above 50%, and try adjusting with the Tx more? I'm out of ideas, so hopefully somebody can throw out an idea or two?

Probably it's just due to the fact that it's a tail-motored heli. Also the tail motor could be wearing out.

My friend put a G90 in his CP Pro and same thing. The tail motor has to work so hard it sounds like it's constantly revving up and down....almost like a motorcycle!

I don't think the tail motor's wearing out because it seems okay when in rate mode. There must be some way to fix this, lots of people have reported success with the G90, and the 401 is a superior gyro to my understanding...

do you have the digi servo switch on or off?

DS switch is off. I was thinking it might be a trimming issue? I know that on a heli with a tail servo, you need to get the tail set up mechanically in rate mode first. Since there's no servo to speak of on the BCPP, I haven't done any of that. Gain and proportional pots on the 3 in 1 are set to the lowest possible values.

Everything I've read thus far says that that's the way it should be. However...

When in rate mode, the nose drifts left even with the trim on the Tx all the way to the right. Is it possible that the tail is drifting left and the "wag" when in HH mode is just being caused by the gyro trying to correct the heading?

Should I try turning up the proportional and/or gain on the 3 in 1? Or will that only make things worse or end up nuking my gyro?

Hey,

I never suggested the tail motor was wearing out....I'm saying your is acting exactly like my friends is and I think it's supposed to and is fine! At least the pulsing tail motor that is. It sounds very strange, but we just deal with it since his tail hold relatively well.

I think that as long as it's a motor driven tail, that's the characteristics of these things! I'm thinking of putting a cheap g90 on my Blade.

In order to make the gy 401 working properly, the internal gyro has to be disconnected first. However, the signal of gy 401 ia meant as input for the tail servo and not meant as an second ESC. That is what you are trying to do now.

Good point! I assumed he had already disabled the internal one....

I thought the gyro had to be disabled too.. For what it's worth.. I took it to my LHS today and asked them for advice. Turns out turning up the proportional on the 3 in 1 gyro fixes everything. The tail motor still doesn't have enough authority to hold rock solid, but it's definately better.
