I'm using the JR wheel and it works great at the gain recommended in the manual.

final results. Bone stock worked perfectly

Alrighty now! :D one happy camper finally. I know why some don't prefer this gyro as it took me some time to sort out what to do and how to do it on my transmitter.
I have excellent results to report now. I went to the field today was pretty windy. I literally did not have to touch anything on my setup.
It is bone stock as per the instructions.
x9303
11mm on the servo horn (used the white one that came with the 8900 servo, not the wheel but the straight arm, I cut off the last two holes to shorten it. The 3rd hole in from the end was 11mm out)
Dual rates set to 85% in normal, ID1, and ID2 -Automatic turned off
Expo set to 50% in all modes normal, ID1, ID2
ATV for rudder set to 150 +/-
Gain set to 60% HH
Gain set to 39% rate mode.
No more hard stops, very predictable, respectable piro, not killer but pretty quick
The travel adjustment on the gyro itself was not set to max movement, but was turned down slightly. I def wont be hitting the ends of travel.
I am very happy with the results, and I admit it took me a while to get it right, but if you look at what I ended up with, I guess my lesson here is read and follow the recommended settings to a T.
Its not like I didn't read it, but I thought.. oh 12 mm is good enough, etc.
