Alright you guys. Think about it. Nitro helis are dangerous. Not just kinda dangerous. VERY dangerous. So are the electrics for that matter. Hopefully this is not news to anbody. In a public park arena, something COULD happen, signs or no signs saying you can or can't fly. Cops or no cops. As much as I'd like to agree with you, and I miss it now, gone are the days that you can fly anywhere you darn well please.
Ok, I feel better now.

Here in Nashville we have 3 city parks with designated R/C fields. I'm surprised more cities don't have them and support the hobby in this way. Each one is AMA sanctioned with paved runways for planes, a couple have designated hover area for helis to practice hovering and stay out of the pattern.
Sure, its $20 a year for a permit to fly at any of the parks but I think its worth it. Frequencies are controlled, they are out of the way from the other park facilities (soccer fields, baseball fields) and the city maintains the field (cuts grass, etc).

I definitely see what your point is but like you said signs or no signs something COULD happen! SO it also COULD happen at an AMA sanctioned field. RIGHT??
I feel this cop was being an A$$ Hole I would take it to court and fight it all the way! I am an Attorney by profession and I Guarantee I would smoke this cop in court! it happens all the time they have a bad day and just look for things to trump up!
Just my 2cents;)

The police has just became a revenue stream for the city. No ryme or reason just tickets.
busting real criminals cost the city too much, So they go after us the cash cows....

I think they'd see that as the guys that are at the AMA sanctioned field are there accepting that something COULD happen and are taking the risk being there so that they can enjoy their hobby,
at a public park these people arent there to dodge helicopters and risk being seriously hurt if they go out of control
however this is not my view- im planning on flying my heli at a big park near me but only when no ones around,
sounds like the cop was having a bad day and wanted someone to take it out on.
blame the nanny state were living in these days

then what about the non AMA members who come out to the fields to watch. they are at a public place where they aren't expecting to dodge helicopters or planks and risk serious injury.

It really pisses me off when the public thinks it's solely the officer who took this upon himself to enforce a law, for whatever reason. Did anyone ever think that maybe, just maybe someone called in a complaint and the officer was just doing his job. It's a real ***** when I go answer a call for someone and get a frickin' uzzi or a shotgun pointed at me. Next time you get a ticket, don't blame the officer and ask yourself if you deserved it. Had to vent......... I'm done.

An AMA field is covered by AMA insurance. A city park is open liability. If a helicopter injures an individual most likely the city will be involved in the law suit in some shape or form. If there is no legislation preventing you from flying there, they could be named as a party to negligence. If there is legislation not allowing you to fly there they could get dinged for not enforcing it.
An AMA field also maintains frequency control standards. Sure, a lot of people are flying 2.4 right now but not all. A city park is a wide open place and that hobby shop half a mile down the street could interfere. It's possible.
The main idea is that the AMA chartered field has performed due diligence to make sure that the flying site is as safe as can be.
In the end, all that would happen is that the hobby as a whole suffers.
You would think that they have enough to do in that crime ridden city like catch some crackhead dope dealing gun totten Sh*t for brains that you see on the news every evening.

something to think about.
today i found out that 32 miles from me.2 months ago a guy ordered one offline to try and learn.
at the park were he went.what happened was or sounds like radio signal was hit heli went from.
1 inch or so off ground that he had it to 2 feet in air flew forward 10 yards tilted right hitting a 9 year old girl on the back and side of lower for arm and wrist cutting off her pinky finger and makeing two cuts to the bone on wrist. cutting two main vaines.6 weeks later he gets a letter from there lawer.
he is being sued. judge grants 400.00 a month for scaring. med. bill till total is payed by wage attachment. after meeting this guy and asking why he tryed it there it was like he said the box and
ins sheet does say can be flown at your park, schoolyard or indoors this product is not intended for use by children without direct adult supervision. could cause injury or damage to the product or other property. (as he said to me injury is a cut or scratch not deep gash or cut off) the book did not say this or he would have sent it back.
my point here is i have took the time now to stop at a few hobbie shops and look at some heli and planes the smaller ones. like 300 to about 450 size. some do say this.maybe some of us people who know what could happen can let new commers know not to try this and why. and just what can happen. these areas do have people at them a lot and kids.

Ask this girl what she thinks about helis at a public park, she will carry a scar for life. This lawsuit is worth Thousands and they will win. That cop may have done you a favor by giving you a ticket, instead of a mechanical failure and you losing it into a few people. This is just food for though. Oh and this was a 450
Keep the big birds where they belong, at a proper flying field. We dont want to be regulated into non-existence.
This was not me, it was copy and pasted, but never the less true.

Im not sure what its like with the AMA, but here in Canada, we have $5,000,000 liability coverage through MAAC (Model Aeronautical Association of Canada). That coverage only applys to MAAC sanctioned fields. Flying at a ball diamond or park does not qualify for the insurance. And with todays lawsuit tendancies, that coverage might be needed if something were to happen.
I have flown in parks as well, but i refrain from it as much as possible now. Where I work we have a saying: There is no such thing as common sense. I had a 10 year old girl walk through the school soccer field (6:00pm) where i was flying my 450 practising inverted hovering. she just walked right through, not around, she didnt stop, right where i was flying. I landed and waited for her to leave, but it seems like some people have no sense of danger anymore. Now I try to fly at the local field as much as possible even though it is a 25 minute drive from my house.

The AMA now has a park pilot program to deal with some of this. It's limited though to 500,000.00 insurance and the aircraft weight and speed are capped (2 pounds, nothing above 60 mph top speed).

For smaller models, I think its great and it helps with some scenarios but it really comes down to common sense.

we fly our 450's at a local mental institution that has a very large grass field. The residents and staff don't seem to mind. Our Nitros will be flown at the flying field only. Too big to risk hitting someone or something :...:, although it's so tempting just to take it down the road to our subdivision park to hoover the 600N just to fire it up!

Thats an awesome idea. I didnt know they had anything like that in effect. With the growing popularity of park flyers and smaller electrics, it doesnt surprise me that theyre making provisions for flying in local parks. I think it is a great idea! Lets hope MAAC follows suit.

In the US, AMA insurance will cover you as long as you are obeying the safety code, which requires safe lines, and control of people and aircraft to keep them apart.
Park or sanctioned field.

What ever happened to a warning? Why should someone get fined when they were not aware that they were doing something illegal? If a police officer came up to me and said that it was illegal to fly where I fly, I'd land, pack up my stuff and not fly there again. Just don't see any need to ticket someone and take money out of their pocket unless they are knowingly breaking the law.

Even if the officer was taken a call he acted a$$holish by giving him a ticket. There was no uzzi or shotgun here. Next time you give a ticket ask you're self if it is really necessary? Double O
P.S. I don't hate cops I'm an officer my self. I hate burocracy.

DoubleO, these are the comments that got me pissed, and what I meant was people making comments like this obviously do not realize what we do everyday. I don't write tickets, I write warrants. I think it's totally unfair to make comments in general about the police, when they are blindly making comments about a situation they know only a portion of the whole story.
Cops seem very adept at enforcing laws they themselves make up or don't fully understand...
Nothing more frustrating than a "Jerk" with authority.
Unfortunately we live in a country run by f'n morons !!!!
I feel this cop was being an A$$ Hole I would take it to court and fight it all the way! I am an Attorney by profession and I Guarantee I would smoke this cop in court!
