I just got started with nitro, and purchased the Thunder Tiger Carry Master, which includes a starter. I was surprised that it didn't have the torque to turn over the motor reliably, so I started using my Dewalt drill with a low clutch setting. It works much better... and I like my yellow tools.

I got a Century Minimax Geared starter, and am running it with a 3S 2100 Lipo.

I had to glue the end cans to the main body to prevent twisting but now it works fantastic!

Very small and light. Starting my OS50 Hyper without any hiccups.

I have the Dynatron with two 3700mah NiMh cells strapped to it with a Miniature Aircraft bracket. Works great

S*^t, that thing would start a 737!

I'm currently using a standard Irvine 12v starter with two 7.2v 3000mah NiMh packs strapped to it. Copes with the 600 but may struggle on a 90 on a cold winter morning!

So I'm assuming you exclusively start a 600N with that starter?

I use a Dynatron with a 5S1P FP on the Miniature Aircraft USA battery holder with a modded Century one-way wand. It starts everything. :bad

has anyone tried the helimax starter before?

looks like it could start a cessna.

that is one sorry excuse for a starter.. personal experience with one is that it's loud, slings grease everywhere, really doesnt have that much power, and is awkward to hold onto.

I went with the Dynatron because I didn't want to buy another starter when I later get a .90

Figure its throwing money away to buy something that will only start a .50

+1

I had my starter left over from my plank flying days about 10 years ago, but if you are to buy one now get one that will start a 90. If your serious about this hobby I think it is more or less a safe bet that you will end up with a 90 some day.

If we ever get a 90 heli (Read Trex 700:)) I'm going to pick up a 24 volt Dynatron and run one of our older 4900 6S1P FlightPowers on it.

You people running a LiPo on your starter, how are you protecting it from damage? Are you building boxes around them? What sort of fuse system are you using?

WayneBrown

the switch on the starter is the only safety, other than having deans connectors..
Ever blow a fuse when you really need to do something?? I won't fuse my starter for the same reason.

Are you not worried that you are holding a hand-grenade running a LiPo powered starter and no fuse?

I've seen a number of these.....they work great. Besides, if it blows up.....it'll only blow up once! :YeaBaby:

I've been using it for about 1 1/2 years and discharge it to near 0V. No issues, but I don't leave it charge unattended, and only plug it in when we are about to use it for the day.
A watched pot never boils is my philosophy, if you are watching it, bad can be minimized before it gets too expensive.

I used to have a LiPo on my Dynatron until I thought about how many amps are running with a hydrolock. The thought of the thing exploding in my hand, over my prized heli worried me.

I changed to the NiMh packs as they are cheap, plenty of grunt and don't fireball with high current flows. I don't have to worry about any knocks the thing gets during transport or use either.

It'll blow up 6 times if using a 6S lipo :YeaBaby:

You are mistaken, if you hydrolock an engine and hit it with a dynatron on 5S, the conrod is blowing up, not the battery.
Don't hydrolock, it's not cool. In the event it does happen, tilt the machine to the muffler side, and turn over by had a few times, then hit it with the starter.

Oh ok, so you need a 5s or 6s for it to be safe from blowing?

what he is saying, is that if the engine is hydro-locked and you are stupid enough (no i'm not calling anyone here stupid) to keep the button pushed to try and force the engine to turn over, you will probably snap the connecting rod or piston before you will cause a lipo to explode.

Now if u have common sense, and notice that the engine is hydro-locked and take the corrective actions to fix the issue, then you will have no issues.

I discussed this in another thread here and had rather different advice, so thanks for clearing that up.
