View Full Version : Starter battery for a Dynatron
What is the best pack arrangement for a dynatron, so I can start my 90s? The 12V car battery doesn't seem to cut it.
I am thinking fo getting the holders and the electric RC car packs, but wanted to make sure there isn't any thing better out recently.
Let me know your thoughts.

5S flight pack works killer.

I am running two of the small, 12 volt, 7 amp gell cells in series.
The current draw is lower at the higher voltage (so the switch should last longer). It spins an O.S. 91 very rapidly and with no hesitation whatsoever.

I am running a Align 6x2 LIPO pack. It spins the 91 like it was a 30. LOL
Make sure you do not have any hydro lock before hitting the switch with this setup. It WILL break the motor if there is too much fuel.

I donīt have a Dynatron starter but some "Pro Star / Texan ty1" starter.
Last two summers it had a 12S NiCd 1600mAh pack (2 x 6S connected in series)
Starting a .50 OS Hyper wasnīt a problem, but as I got a Hirobo Freya with Webra 91 engine last summer, this starter setup began to feel a bit underpowered. Maybe batteries were getting old..
Since I use 4S 2300mAh A123 in my MiniTitan, I decided to give them a a try.
Starting a .50 engine with 4S pack even at +2C temp isnīt a problem at all.
Thanks to poor weather here this time of year I havenīt tried to start that 91 engine yet.
I did a small test spin with that Webra engine.. Seems to spin just fine at room temperature. Hopefully weīll soon find out if it can actually be started at flying field too.

I'm using a 4S 3700mAh lipo with a Robbe Heavy Duty starter and it manages to start 90's with no problems, although with the Dynatron you could easily go up to a 6S pack but I'd be worried about bending con-rods.
Surprised no one has mentioned this yet. http://www.afineredgemfg.com/
Here's a picture of hootowls.
I'm a fan of 4s A123's. A strip of industrial velcro holds them to the dyna nicely. It'll start a 90 in its sleep.

I rigged up a 3s1p 2100mah lipo to my old hi torque starter. Seems to spin up good, but haven't actually tried on the copter yet.

I have the Hobbico 180 starter with the Wimpy 12v gel cell. Fully charged it would crank my Ys 80 about once.. Plucked the gell cell out and replaced it with a home made 5s Li-po. That puppy cranks now :)
Oh, and if I get hydro lock, the one way clutch slips in the wrong direction... Which is probably not good for my motor

I use a pair of T-rex 450 packs in series. It's a good idea to make sure they are similar packs and that they have been recently charged and balanced. I think they start to puff if you grab a pair of packs at various levels of charge. :'/
a single 3S pack on the Dynatron isn't a good idea - well on a 90 anyway - if the engine stalls the starter you'll puff your packs as the battery sees this as a short circuit. If you've ever shorted a pack while soldering the battery connector you'll know what I mean. :(

I'm using the Finer Edge/Makita/Dynatron setup. It works great!
