Hi,

I'm running a pretty new (1-2 Gallons) OS 50 Hyper in my Raptor. At the beginning the engine ran really cool and didn't even get warm on the crankcase. Now after around one to two Gallons of CP20 the Hyper is getting pretty hot on the crankcase. I can only touch it for a few seconds.
The engine is running really rich. Its actually running so rich that it it hardly makes it from idle to 1600 or 1900 rpm without going out. You really have to give throttle slowly to not make it go out!
I was thinking that this might even be too rich. But I don't really want to turn the engine any leaner because its already getting so hot. Oh yeah, and the engine is running at an outside temp of around 25-30°C.
Thanks for you help in advance!

PS: I looked inside the engine and the piston kinda has a slight brown color. Is that really bad or does it come from CP?

The brown colour is an indication that your engine has been running lean. If your needles are set to a rich setting but your engine is still running hot then there is a couple of things you need to check.

1. Make sure that the head of your engine is not loose, get an M3 driver and give those head bolts a real good tighten, if the head is loose then your engine will run lean.

2. Make sure that your fuel tubing is ok, look for holes, pierces, or cuts in the tubing, if in doubt about the tubing then replace it.

3. Make sure that your clunk line is up to the job, a weak/old clunk line can cause your engine to go lean.

4. Check that no foreign objects or dirt are in the system, so check fuel tubing, filters, and fuel tank for anything that shouldnt be there.

Hope this helps. :)

PS. Take a look at this thread, it may help you. http://www.helifreak.com/about5679.html

Its actually running so rich that it it hardly makes it from idle to 1600 or 1900 rpm without going out.

From my experience that is usually a sign of the motor being too lean. At least the low end is too lean.
If the motor quits trying to transistion from idle to midrange, it is too lean.
If it spits and sputterings while transisitioning and then clears out it is too rich on the low end.

Where is your high and low needles? Yes it will vary.

I agree with Blakka and David, sounds to lean, especially if the piston is brown on top.

I dont know about my low needle setting but my high needle is at about 2 1/4 turns out.

You guys were right. I tightened the head of my engine and I changed the clunk line which was really old, soft and about to rip apart. Now my Hyper is running really cool again and has lots of power!
Thanks for all your help!
