I fried my video card so it's time for a new one, damn fan died. I need a video card that I can run a 30' cable from to my 60" plasma. It has RGB, RCA, SVIDEO and HDMI. Sound is not critical even so I think the computer will still have it. Now I have it narrowed down to a couple PCIe X 16 cards that will work for my system. Is there anything I should be looking for tomorrow at Frys? If HDMI is the only way to go then first do they make cables that long and then of course I am sure that is very expensive. Will RCA or SVIDEO be ok?

Also I will need at least 20' of extension cable for my DX7 plug. Is this just a standard headphone jack like cable?

I think it is a standard stereo mini plug. I use a USB extension cable myself. I got it on-the-cheap on eBay.

Also, you don't need HDMI as long as the video card has DVI out. Most these days do. HDMI is just DVI and audio on the same cable. Of course, if you use DVI out, you'll need a DVI-to-HDMI cable if your TV doesn't have a DVI connector and you'll need to run audio separately. I buy all my A/V cables from http://www.monoprice.com.

oh, and remember that if you have a long cable, your image will suck passed a certain point...

Since HeliSmith talked about an extension for the interface cable, I would assume that he's putting the computer in fairly close proximity to the TV, so video cable length shouldn't be an issue.

I was thinking a 30' run. Oh well I will get the video card with the DVI out and I will consider moving it closer.

Thanks guys!

for the dx7 extension from the computer, yeah I am using a 12 foot headphones extension cable. Works just fine :)

Ok so I have a DVI output on my laptop, and a DVI input on my older Sony rear projection HD tv. My video card supports many different resolutions for outputing to tv's any suggestions as to which ones I should start with or should I google the TV to find out its natives?

I have a second DVI port on the Radeom 2600 HD I went with. I have SVideo, DVI to HDMI and DVI to RGB. I have alll of these plugs available on my Panasonic 60" plasma. Which one will be able to run 30 feet while maintaining the best quality? I don't want to move my PC.

Now if the answer is RGB, which I think will give the best quality at that run, I can easily make an audio cable from my pc to my surround sound. If no one answers I will be shopping for an RGB cable of the length I need and I will report back how it worked out. Hope it isn't too much for my TV!

Thanks anyone who can answer for me. Man to sim on a 60"! :D

I run 15ft Monster Cables RGB's and a 15 ft HDMI to DVI. The pictures perfect, but thats only 15ft, not 30ft. Oh btw, those 15 ftt cables were around 150 bucks.

Component Video(RGB) can go in excess of 30' and not hurt the image quality because it is more robust than HDMI and DVI, since it is an analog signal. It is also capable of delivering up to 1080p.

You could always try something like this:

Cool thanks for your help guys. I am going to move the computer over near the TV and check out the HDMI and then the RGB and I will make my decission.

Ok I dragged my PC over there and plugged in the DVI to HDMI into the HDMI on the TV. It worked plug and play no problem but there was little specks in the picture. Not normal ones it looked like interference. Couldn't make that go away. Was HD though would work great if they weren't there.

Then I tried the SVIDEO to RGB and it worked great, excellent quality but it wasn't HD. I guess what I will try next is to find a DVI to RGB so that I can try for HD through the RGB which is how my Cable HD is hooked up now.

I played for quite a while trying to get Phoenix to display pixel perfect on a Pioneer 50" (720p native) plasma. I ended up switching to a Sony 46" LCD. I was determined to have no scaling. In the end, my MacBook Pro outputs 1920 x 1080 to the Sony's native 1920 x 1080 panel. The Phoenix image is excellent.

My only suggestion is to find the native rate of your TV and send that resolution from your PC. The problem is that depending on TV and video card, the input/output choices may not correspond (e.g. the TV's available resolutions on the DVI input may not match your PCs output over DVI, or the TV's component video (RGB) input may not match your computer's output, and so on.) That was the problem with the particular Pioneer panel I was using.

A high quality VGA or DVI cable can deliver good signal at 30', no prob. But it'll cost you. A USB extension is a lot cheaper. So I put the computer close to the TV and use the longer USB to get me and my radio where I want to be.

Hi all,

I have my PC under my 60" samsung tv. I have an rf keyboard with rollermouse and I use a long USB extension cable.

I can sit on the sofa, keyboard on the coffee table, usb cable runs under the pool table. The pc is close to the tv so the video is great.

Cheers,
Leslie
