(update: HeliFun events/ contests have been added to this thread - and also onto the website - http://helifun.org (http://helifun.org/))

Hi Everyone,

On Saturday and Sunday - May 17th and 18th, the Eastern Shore Aeromodelers Club will be holding the 1st annual "HeliFun" funfly in Hurlock, MD.

Come shake off the Winter flying blues. We have a GREAT field for heli flying.

Open flying both days until dusk. There will be 8 flying stations along with a large designated area off of the flying field for events, hovering, novices, setup, etc. Night Flying on Saturday night.

HeliFun Events:

SpotAuto - the Pilot who Autos down closest to the target on the ground... Wins. To make it fair, Expert Class Pilots will need to auto down inverted.

HeliPickUp - An event designed for beginners and experts alike. A 4" metal disk will be suspended 2 1/2' from the bottom of the skids. Drinking Straws with small magnets glued to the ends of them, will be vertical on the ground (using wooden skewers driven into the ground). The Pilot who gathers up the most magnets/ straws in 2 minutes... Wins.

HeliLimbo - Also designed for all skill levels. Basically you fly your 400/ 450 through 4 stations of two horizontally mounted light PVC pipes, 5' off of the ground... spaced at diminishing vertical heights apart (38"-34"-30"-26"). It is timed, and the pilot that makes it through (which is harder then it sounds) with the best time... Wins. To win this... has some Real bragging rights!!

A PA system for music and announcements. Lunch and drink are included Saturday, with the $10.00 pilot registration fee. For everyone else, we will have the barbeques setup and will be cranking out hamburgers ($1.50), hot dogs ($1.00), and sausages ($1.50), along with chips ($.50), various salads, deserts, and ice cold drinks ($.50) - both Sat & Sun. Breakfast will also be available on Sunday Morning. T-shirts will be on sale for $15.00 apiece.

Our flying field is located at 6035 Shiloh Camp Rd, Hurlock, MD. (N 38° 36’24.8” / W075° 53’07.6”) We have a brand new field, so if you use Google Map/ Satellite view, the new field is not in the current photo. Look over our new field at:

http://www.esacclub.org/New%20field.htm (bottom right photo shows completed construction)

Many of the pilots who have confirmed attending, are some of the Best in the NE. Many of them are factory sponsored pilots. We are "thrilled" to have them!! There will be no lack of outrageous "off the hook" flying for everyone to see!!

We are putting together a great raffle.

> Buy a boat?

No kidding, heh. Anyone over there got a boat and care to come pick me up? ;) Of course, boats get terrible gas mileage so it would probably end up costing more than just driving (I would use less than 6 gallons to get there and back in my car) . :DOH

yep... it is turning into a two day event. :) :)

You guys asked for it... you got it :)

I don't blame you guys for not wanting to come down, and then go right back home!

We thought about 2 days originally... but we thought it may had been to much to ask of everyone coming... man were we wrong :) ;)

We didn't realize so many pilots were going to come from so far away... that is Totally Cool!!

We are going to probaly fly with some plankers on Sunday... as they are going to want to get out to the field for some fun too... but they are all truly cool people... and we are going to have fun!

I am working on getting the food on Sunday also... so far it looks good for it... just not 100% sure quite yet.

Mark - I have a feeling i am not going to have much time for flying on Sat - but Sun I may just pick your brain some, like I did at Lums last fall with the Hurricane... and get you to look over my setup with the DX7 and the 600n I just got.

jKos - come on!! the more the merrier!!! there are some good pilots coming... so there will be plenty of great flying, heli talk, and setup help.

I've found the dx7 to work quite well with the 600n, I had my doubt at firsts with a 7ch rx comming from a R149 but even got the switch glow tied in off a y harness with the gyro gain channel, seems to be running pretty good,I'll be more than happy to help you out in any way I can

Hi Everyone,

Just wanted to give you some updates to the Event.

The event has been made into a 2 days... because so many pilots traveling from NJ, PA, VA, OH, and even some from DE - want to stay over and fly for 2 days.

We have designated parking setup for RVs (and many are traveling that way)... and we also are setting up some group deals on hotel rooms.

We are finalizing the room details now - but it looks like rooms will be from $54.95 single/ $59,95 double at Americas Best Value in Cambridge, MD - to around $72/ $80 at the Days Inn in Cambridge, MD. Exact pricing details for Days Inn will not be posted until tomorrow... but the Americas Best prices are solid. If you decide to stay at Americas Best Value - book the room on the Internet - it is $15 cheaper through the Net, versus calling them (and there are additional AAA, etc. discounts available also):

http://www.americasbestvalueinn.com/bestv.cfm?idp=528

We will have food available on both Sat and Sun. We will also be serving up Breakfast Sunday morning. Breakfast is going to be egg, cheese & sausage sandwiches... and probaly bacon & eggs with fried potatoes - orange juice, and coffee

We currently have some additonal sponsorship and items for the raffle. We are finalizing some of the details, but Callie Graphics stepped up with a gift certificate and raffle items, ReadyHeli is in for a $50 gift certificate (Thanks John & Jen)... and soon I will be finishing up details and announcing that two of the very best custom canopy painters out there... are stepping up with a gift certificate for a custom order/ custom painted canopy from each of them.

That's it for now. Don't forget to drop over to the Event thread on RR once in awhile - it is very active.

Thanks!

Any new updates Bstock?
Looking forward to this event, should be a nice warmup funfly for the start of the season for us folks up here in cold NJ

give any thought to some little events like a simple auto contest, or little 450 size AC style limbo through the box events or demolition derby, last 450 in the air wins lol :rolling

Hi Mark & Everyone,

There are some updates to post on the event.

We secured a group room rate of $75 a night at the Days Inn in Cambridge, MD. - good for Friday and/ or Saturday night. Reference HeliFun when you call. Their number is 410-228-4444. Please book by May 1st to get the group rate.

We will have food for both days - and will even be serving breakfast on Sunday morning. :)

The Sponsor list is growing... and we are over $1000.00 in Raffle Prizes at this point!! ("Thanks so Much" to our Sponsors!!)

We are getting a lot of questions on the funfly... so we built a quick website to organize the information into one place. The URL is:

http://helifun.org

The updated list of Raffle Prizes and Sponsors is on the helifun website (along with lots more information on the event).

I am totally COOL with holding some events! A Spot Auto contest sounds good.

We were kicking around a Timed Hover also. Basically a pilot would draw a random time out of a hat... and he would need to hover that long (guess his time), and set it down. The pilot closest to the time he drew out of the hat... would win.

I am glad you brought it up... we were also thinking a 400/ 450 Limbo would be fun... but i was not sure how many would want to take part in that. How many of you would like to do that?

Basically you fly your 400/ 450 through 3 stations (maybe 4) of two horizontally mounted light bambo type poles... spaced at different heights apart (varying between 24 & 30 inches). It is timed... and the pilot that makes it through (which is harder then it sounds) with the best time... wins. Mark can tell you all about it... there is video up on RR in "The Gathering" video section of him doing it... inverted! It is great fun!! To win this... has some Real bragging rights!!

Thanks!

Hi Everyone,

HobbyTown of Easton is going to be out to the event as a Vendor.

They are bringing some 30% Cool Power, blades, batts, servos, kits, etc.

The Owners Laura & Steve, asked me to ask you guys if there is anything special that you would like for them to have at the event for you?

She is getting ready to place her orders for the stuff for HeliFun next Monday - and if you need her to have anything special (parts, fuel, etc.) to be at the event for you... she is happy to do it. Just let us know.

Thanks - Brent

Hi Guys,

The T-shirts arrived. Here is a front and back shot of it.

Lacy is our model (we work together). We didn't have enough time to change the graphic/ order to add the second day (18th) to it... sorry!

I think it still looks pretty good though. It's also made of good cotton.

Thanks - Brent

Here in the DC Metro area it was raining hard most of the day yesterday (Sunday, April 20, 2008). I saw on the RADAR the eastern shore was clear of rain. I drove on down to fly at the esac (http://www.esacclub.org/) club field.

As I got closer to Hurlock, I noticed the trees and flags were being whipped around by strong winds. I got to the field, no one was there. I checked the windsock and got out to check the wind. I got right back into my car and drove back to Arlington. The wind was a steady 20 knots. I wished I had brought my kite.

Anyway, I now know where the club field is and, I plan to attend one day of the HeliFun event.

Just got the kids to bed... and a minute to answer you back. Wow... talk about a die hard heli pilot :) I'm sorry I missed you!!

I wish I knew you were coming... I would have liked the chance to show you around. What did you think of the field?

At the ends of each of the covered pits, on both sides of the main pavilion... we are going to have the pilots setup their easyups - basically we will be continuing the easyups in a straight line down the flight line on each end of the pits. Should look pretty cool :)

The windsock was just put up a couple of weeks ago.

Did you see the new grass/ section down by the windsock? That is going to be the event area on the left... and we will also save part of it for those that want to camp at the event. It is perfect for camping... nice and level... and the grass is coming in nice and thick :)

PM me... and I will give you my cell #... in case you decide to drop by again. I will meet up with you next time.

Looking forward to the chance to meet you at HeliFun!!

Is this event AMA Sanctioned???

bstock
04-22-2008, 05:19 PM
It will be... but we don't have the paperwork back yet.

Our club's CD passed away recently... so we amended the application... and that slowed it down some.

I called today, and talked to the lady at the AMA in charge of sanctioning events - and she assures me we will have the sanctioning confirmation back before the event ("in the next couple of weeks").
