HS5245's smoked
I had wanted to use the six volt setting for my HS5245 servos so I set the throttle stick on my DX7 to the maximum position for that segment of the programming sequence. About 30 seconds later two of the HS5245's smoked. All three of them were hot. The one that did not smoke is most likely weakened at the least. The receivers and gyro seem to be okay and did not get hot or even warm.
What happened here ? I thought the maximum voltage for the BEC was six volts ? I have not put a DVM on the ESC yet as I will have to do a bit of disassembly to get at all the wires and plugs to do the voltage output check. I went back into programming and reset the BEC voltage at mid stick then powered back up. I gave the throttle a little nudge and the motor started to spin then stopped and will now not turn. Has the ESC gone bad ? Note that all my programming and testing was done with a 3s and a 4s battery pack, if that matters. Bob |

I would check your BEC voltage. If it's damaged, it could very well let unregulated voltage through.
As far as the ESC, I think you need at least 15-16 Volts for the ESC to work.

That is what I did. I had programmed the ESC and folded the blades. Decided to check my settings and plugged the ESC back in. Gawd, I hate making expensive dumb mistakes. Dumb mistakes alone are bad enough, but when you add expensive to the equation....

CRAP!
That does suck The BEC may be damaged now too, so you may need a new Speed control on top of the servos....DOH!!! |

Please explain how I could also have damaged the BEC. The motor did not want to spin up right after the smoke so you could be right. I have not had time tocheck anything today. Went to a heli fun fly in Punta Gorda. Lots of sponsored pilots doing some amazing stuff with their helis. Tough to take the weather too. ~80 degrees, sunny and a light breeze.

BEC's are only designed for so many amps. Usually 3 to 5 amps are used in the helis.
If your servos were binding long enough that they got hot and burnt up, theres a chance that the bec was well over it's amp rating and could have burnt also. I'm not e BEC expert, but others on the forum will be able to tell you the chance that it smoked too. Ask Heliburns on the forum. He does a lot of BEC testing. |
