Blade 400, 401/9257 gyro, all else stock.

When I put in left rudder, the heli starts a medium descent, and when I put in right rudder, the heli starts climbing. I am still new at hovering, maybe half hour actual air time. I try to sense if I am adding power or removing it when I push left and right on the stick, and I don't believe I am. I am doing hovering practice and I want to keep the tail right in front of me. The tail holds pretty steady, but sometimes as I'm increasing power before lift off the tail will shift a little either left or right. Focusing on the right power input, pitch, and roll, is still pretty difficult and hard to take focus a little off of those and use rudder, especially when I need to correct the power. Any suggestions? I have the stock battery. I was thinking it could be that the 9257 digital servo draws a little more power than the stock servo, but then why would it climb yawing to the right?

It's possible that you are applying pitch inputs as you apply rudder. I found it helped to open the back of the radio, and tighten the screw, a bit, that applies pressure to the pitch. This will help to reduce accidental pitch inputs when applying rudder.

This sounds backwards.

Let's think about what's happening here. The mains are turning clockwise so the TR is providing thrust to counteract the torque by holding the nose "right". To do so, it's "stealing" power from the drivetrain. With no change in power, you apply right "rudder" and guess what? You're now asking the TR to provide more thrust, "stealing" even more power from the drivetrain. Without a small increase in power, HS will drop slightly therefore lift decreases and the heli descends.

Conversely, if you want the nose to go left, you're easing off on the TR thrust, thus reducing the power requirement of the TR. HS goes up a bit, lift increases and the heli will ascend.

You describe just the opposite. I'm gonna have to go get more coffee and think about it for a sec. :)

Hi,

Skiddz gave an excellent explanation. One of the reasons I have often seen is that the belt is too tight so when you do a left or right movement on the tail you drain more power than you should. The result is more apparent than with a well adjusted belt. May not be it but I would definitely give it a look. But that would not explain the climb :confused:

You are right, I had it backwards, and that you mentioned more thrust on the tail, I took apart the tail and had a sticky bearing. I replaced both tail bearings on the belt shaft.
The same occurs, but much less. When I fly the helis in Real Flight, this does not happen. I have had the heli apart so many times, learning blade tracking, balancing the blades, adjusting the head, etc... There is so much to learn besides the task of learning to fly. But I love it. Now for power, I am thinking about upgrading the stock battery. Wow! I thought that part would be easy. Lipo chargers, balancers, puffing, fire, etc...
My stock e-flite charger is a balanced charger with various colored lcds if in balanced charge, when all three cels have been charged. But it costs 24.00 if I wanted to replace it. I have read that sometimes it is only charging 2 cels, etc... There is no way to actually tell. And if i upgrade to better batteries, then I'm sure I will have to upgrade the charger, and have one that I can actually see how much voltage and charge is on each cell. I have read on the forums and so many people suggest different things. I was looking at the e-station bc6 ac/dc balancing charger. I am flying a 3s 1p 11.1 volt battery in the blade 400, but as I continue, I'm sure I'll have more helis like everybody else. So instead of just getting a 3s charger, I can get one that will do up to 5s and 6s. Any ideas

I'm using the stock charger for 2200mah packs with no problems. It's actually not a bad charger. I found a wall wart that outputs 12V @ 4A from an AC outlet. I just wish that I could measure the amount of charge I'm putting back into the cell. If I purchase a logger, than I may try using it to measure the capacity needed to recharge my batteries.
