I am currently finishing my first heli (T-REX 600CF), and have a question about mounting the gyro (GY401).
To be able to hide the wires as much as possible, I have mounted the gyro with the wires pointing to the front of the heli. I looked at a lot of heli pictures and I have never seen this done before. So my question is, am I in trouble?
There is a switch for reversing the servo, so that way I can swap left movement with right movement.
Thanks!

Its fine. It just senses rotation it really doesnt care about its orientation. Once you get the direction set correctly the only reason you would have to change it is if you flipped the gyro upside down and mounted it under the boom like they do on some models.
I mean think about it, if the gyro is facing frontwards and it turns, whats it going to do if the gyro is mounted 90 degrees, its still going to turn and correct.

Thanks BarracudaHockey, I also thought it would work in theory, but as I said I am new to this hobby so I just wanted the opinion of an expert.
Can't wait to fly!!!

If you need some more assurance, that' how mine is mounted...inverted with the leads heading towards the front. No worries.

The JR G770 3D is the only gyro I have had yet that is axis sensative, the mount is specific.

What?
The JR G770 is axis sensitive, so that it needs special mountings than other gyro's?
Could you please explain?

the JR gyro needs to be mounted "sideways", like if you were looking at your heli from the left side, the label would read upside down.

Based on the diagram in the manual, if you are holding your heli with the tail in your right hand and the nose in the left, you can read the label. The Align 500X is also axis sensitive, needs to be upright instead of on its back, but noone uses those, they suck!!

Hi.
Ehhh, a bit confused here... How does the gyro "know" what direction the heli flies in?? (or how it is mounted?)
If it needs to be mounted with the label readable from the left side, what happens when you fly sideways or upside-down then? -Does it not work ok or something "tells" the gyro that this and this is happening?
I can understand that JR says in the manual it should be mounted in a way where the wires do not get too tight, etc or that the gyro should be mounted in the horizontal plane.
But not that it is only 1 way of mounting it. It cannot be true...... :-)

The only thing you have to ensure is that the axis that the gyro senses is aligned with the main shaft. Whether that manufacturer puts the label and switches on the top or side is irrelevent. Rotationally speaking, the gyro mounting of ANY gyro doesn't make a difference. Think about it, the gyro doesn't know, nor react any differently, if you are flying frontwards, backwards, or sideways, it just senses rotation about the axis it controls and applies an amount of correction corresponding to the gain you have set. Not enough gain, not enough correction, too much gain, too much correction(tail wag)

I understand completely, the Gyro only has to be perpendicular to the main shaft, I am just wierd when it comes to directions, the manual states to install the gyro as per the diagram, which shows a line drawn through the main shaft parallel to the frame in line with the lower face of the gyro. The Align 500X gyro is what confused me in the first place, its basicaly a Telebee in a differant wraper, I had installed it on a friends Dragonus exactly as I would a 401, it would not work, what ever tail input I would give it, it would spin in that direction. I mounted it on the left side of the frame, and it worked perfectly. I looked at a Blade 400 at the LHS, RTF out of the box with a Telebee gyro that is mounted standing up, not laying on its back like every other gyro I have installed. Based on what we all know it shouldn't matter, but in some cases it does, so I play it safe and follow the instructions.
