:? Hi all,

On my second flight today I was lifting off and as I got airborne I noticed that I was lossing power so I mad a timely landing. The engine continued to idle so moved the needle valve a couple of clicks clockwise, 5 to be exact, and then lifted off with no further power problems. On the previous flight I did notice that the engine seemed to surge slightly and the machine seemed to turn right as the power increased, but nothing that caused control problems. I am think about taking the engine out and check for any damage. I have 13 flights on the machine. I am flying on grass and have considered an air filter but cannot find one for a 30 size engine.

The other thing I noticed was a funny sound that I can't explain other than to say it sounded like a cricket chirpping.. Mayby it's my tin ears?

What your describing sounds like the engine was too lean. It probably has been right on the edge of being lean for a while and the weather conditions probably were just right to make it leaner.
I don't believe there is any reason to take the engine out and check it. If it is running fine now, I would believe you have the mixture correct. No need for an airfilter either, just something else to cause problems in my opinion.

David,

You are correct, I was running lean. After attending the Brooks flyin yesterday I was able to see how much smoke is normal. So I went 3 clicks to the rich side and the engine is smoking more and running better.

I meet some very nice people at the flyin and they were very happy to answer my questions.

Anyhow thanks for your advice.

Ed :)
