NEW! TRM Tuned Pipe

Thanks Will and Al. Yes the models (Spectra-G and #1005 SE) are both in the air again. I did have an incident a while back with the Spectra-G and had to a partial rebuild.

Apparently I had failed to do a bit of preventative maintenance and had the tail come off of the machine in flight. This was no box/tail gear/shaft failure so all of you can relax, just a bit of oversight that was nearly all the pilots failure to do proper PM. My tail clamp has loosened and I tightened it back (old closed box and mounting) not realizing that the loose box had damaged the boom notch. The neat part was that the model landed on the head and there was no damage within the frames other than bending the clutch center block!! I completed the PM, reassembled and am now back-up and going using the same closed box and mounting as the production Spectra-G now uses.

Testing can now resume! See you all at B'Ham if you are going.

Not Yet. Al has been crazy busy lately but I should be getting the pipe back soon. Everyones shedules and work loads have been taking a wee bit of a toll..... :arggg:

With the TRM tuned pipe being delayed, what would be your second choice for the exhaust? I've sent my G231 to Toxic Al for mods, and I would like to get a pipe that is best suited for the TRM 231.

How's your engine running? Is it still gaining more power, or would you say that it has peaked out?

I do have a question regarding the maximum power. John I spoke with Toxic Al few months back, Al told me that based on limited testing, he has found the 'Happy' RPM of 12,500. One thing I didn't ask him was with what pipe is that number valid? If you're using Century V2 muffler, would it still be 12,500, or lower?

Also, since you guys had much more time running this engine, and Al's quote was few months old, would you say that this is still the case, or has your engine found a 'Happier' RPM with further tweaking and breaking in.

Lastly, what fuel mixture and needle settings are you using now after about a year of use? Has it changed any?

My motor is running just fine. The horsepower has peaked and the motor is still very strong.

The happy point is at 12,500-12,750 using a tuned muffler unit. The v2 Centurt and the Hatori both like this RPM and work very well.

Using the TRM tuned pipe, the RPM likes to be 13,000 to 13,250 and the power is amazing since the horsepower is raised at 33% (from @ 2.8 to 3.8 HP).

I have found that either the Hatori or Century will operate just fine at 13,000 RPM as well.

You are correct, this new 13,000 RPM range is with a fully broken in motor. I would only recommend this RPM however, if you know the carb and needles extremely well. This RPM is running the carb on it's borderline of needle/flow settings and result in having to have a very fined tuned needle (both of the needels are open very much H=2 turns and L=1 2/8).

Using the same fuel mixture at 50:1

Thank you for the update. While this is great news, but confusing to me at the same time. I can see where 2 full turns on the high needle would make sense. But why have you leaned out the low needle? I thought the rule of thumb was not never, ever go below 1 3/8. Or was that just safe setting to make sure that a noob like me wouldn't burn the engine out?

What about velocity stacks? Would you recommend them? I know that debris is a concern, so I am considering one of these...

Thanks John. I've also gone ahead and ordered a velocity stack from DDM. This is the proline version that will be contained within a air filter. If you feel that the velocity stack will affect the needle settings, please do let me know. Otherwise I'll just assume all is well with the v-stack.

How is the pipe comming? I am thinking about getting a Spectra G and one of the 231 motors. Is the pipe available now?

1.5 years of pipe testing it obviouslly is not high on the to do list. While I would like to see a 'better' tuned pipe I find no problem with the one I am using setup right. No cracks no worries just flying.
