NEW! TRM Tuned Pipe

Here are a few preliminary shots of the PROTOTYPE Toxic Racing tuned pipe system. I am currently pulling down the Spectra-G for installation on the TRM-231. For now the motor has to be mounted with the head facing forward due to the length of the pipe and the fact that the prototype system is currently one piece. This has been done for initial test purposes only!!!

The production model of the pipe system WILL be designed as two piece and the header will be designed to run on either side. This means that the motor can be run either forward facing or backward facing. As I said, this is only a working prototype and has been set up as it has for ease of handling.

I will post mounted pictures and let everyone know of the progress as the unit is tested. The pipe should easily be a gain of power by 30% over stock exhaust systems.


The motor shown in the pictures show the adapter. This motor is the new TRM G-26 proto for testing. It will not be installed with this pipe, yet. The pipe is being installed using the shown adapter (on the G-26) on my well used TRM G-231. The G-26 shown will be used for ratio testing in the Spectra-G after it is broken-in within my X-Cell SE.

That's what I said when I first saw it. The neat thing is that the tuned pipe assembly weighs less than the Hatori!!

Here are some photos of the installed tuned pipe. Then tuned pipe is lighter than the Hatori by a couple of ounces and after turning the motor around and moving the tank the model balanced perfectly.

So far I have 3 flights (adjustment) on the tuned pipe system and am dialing in the throttle curves. The tuned pipe gives the motor a good deal more power and is a bit louder than the Hatori, but has a pleasant ding, da, ding, ding, da-ding sound :mrgreen: When the pipe "hits" on spool up, it will rabbit ear the main blades until they catch up! Of course, I adjusted the throttle curve to eliminate this! Full power is something to behold.

Have ya trimmed a canopy for it yet or does it need trimming?

I have not trimmed a canopy yet. I have a new Tempest canopy to use. I am currently using a hacked up canopy that I originally used on the prototype when I first got it built. The entire bottom was cut out (so that I could see the model, yet see what was going on) early on in the Spectra-G testing. Not the best looking thing, but it works!

I was impressed with the PERFORMANCE heck when the bird is on the ground and you crack the thottle open it looks like the gyro has a lot of work to do :smokin:

wow. I am really impressed. And it looks like some serious thought went into this. What I really like it the connection to the motor part. On some other designs out there its impossible to get the bolts to the motor. As well the support on the tail part looks like a clean and user friendly aproach.

Good news with this pipe!

-No problem with the mount, it is staying on without any issues.

-The throttle transition is very smooth and predictive. At first the power was available right off of idle and the model spooled too quickly (like an electric) and folded back the blades. I cured that with the throttle curve.

-The sound although louder than the Hatori is not too loud and most think that it really sounds cool.

-The needles are very easy to set using the top down method (too rich first and lean down a bit at a time).

-The motor is running cool showing no signs of overheating.

-The pipe has a very broad range as set. This is great! :clappp

-The TRM G-231 and pipe combo makes tremendous power!!

I found that to properly zero in on the needle settings is straight forward. I made the needles purposely rich (as seen in the first video) and then:

-Set the bottom needle after warm up to a fat and consistent idle (on the slight lumpy side from dead smooth).

-Flew the model and made several powered climbs leaning the top needle a bit each time until the motor cleaned up. During this time the full power was still very good while being very rich, but as the throttle cam back off of full the motor would load and almost quit. What was happening was that the pipe was scavenging and stuffing the cylinder with fuel and being so rich would load too much fuel in the cylinder once the throttle was reduced. Once leaned down, the motor acted normally.

-Richened the low needle a very small amount to help feed fuel into the transition point.

-Checked the plug and found it going ever so slightly Grey. I cleaned the plug and re-installed.

-Richened the top needle a small bit and rechecked the plug. The plug is now back to the light tan color.

That was it! Now this model has nearly too much power!!! :glasses: :glasses: Very COOL!

We will be getting some flight video this weekend at BlackSheep to post ASAP so that everyone can see and hear this combo perform.

to repond about the pipe release date it has been moved, the pipe great power and is light and easy to set up but six months into testing the header had a freak
break and I wanted to redesign it before we had any problems. John had a wreck
with his bird so we are going to torture test the new pipe soon. I will keep you posted cuz I want the pipe out there. Peace, Toxic Al :twisted:
