Here's my take on grounding the boom to the frame and tail case...

Make sure sure there's continuity to the frame or else you have to scratch a little coating off the frame and/or the screws.

You will need to use some wire if you're using GF frames.

Check with meter when your done. There should be continuity from the outter race of the back tail case to the frame.

Where did you get the metal tail box spacers?

Bob I checked GrandRC and they have part H50051 Aluminum Hexagonal Bolt (http://www.grandrc.com/inc/sdetail/108436) in stock. Hope this helps..

when you replace the plastic mainshaft bearing blocks with metal bearing holders you will have those 4 x metal hex tail box spacers as they are in the plastic mainshaft bearing blocks in the factory kit:thumbup:

and as i write this readyheli has stock of both the hex spacers AND the metal bearing holders(already fitted a set to my heli yesterday)

Nice mod for someone who wants something to do :) I think for those that did not feel comfortable doing the wire mod, for whatever reason, this will be more itimidating to them.

Not sure if its a concern but might want to mention that overtightening the screws in the boom block, the ones that touch the bearings, could possibly do damage.

Dont get me wrong.. clean mod. I just upgraded to metal main bearing blocks so I have the aluminum parts from inside the plastic blocks. I might do this myself. Not quite sure I understand the tapping in the metal tail. Is that to just do away with sanding? I have continuity on my new metal tail from just the sanded area on the boom from the wire mod.

WARNING from anyone gettng the metal tail. The finish scratches very easy :(

Kevin,
I think two more pix would make the mod easier to understand. One showing the 'pointy' screw that's biting the boom at the tail; one showing the two 'pointy' screws going THROUGH the hex bolts and contacting the boom and contacting the bearing. It took my slow brain awhile to figure it out.

Very sweet mod. I'm going for it.

Yep. That'll do it.

What are you trying to achive with grounding the outer bearing races?

What are you trying to achive with grounding the outer bearing races?

There are many ways to solve a given problem. This is one way of doing it. Testing have shown that gounding to the outer race is effective at bleeding off static charge buildup in the boom. This may not be the best way as more testing are going on. Some have already choosen to use the wire method as shown here.

Only the two center pics shows ideal / effective grounding of the front belt pulley.

I guess you simply forgot to check continuity through the bearrings.

How did you get the bearings out of the metal tail case bearing plates without damage?

Also wondering how the boom box fix works since in mine the two halves are not made of conductive material (looks like glass reinforced plastic GRP). How do the mods provide for conductivity from boom to CF chassis side plates?
