Some have seen the model I am flying now, but I have to remind that this model is likely not what the final will look like. Still trying to get the belt to the tail thing.

Have several hours on it now and it is doing well, there are some things in the frames I want to change but the main concepts are working great... those being the directly linked mini digitals and the short belt up front.

I have it right at 7lbs 5 ounces and it has plenty of punch with a 24-4 on 10S...but then again so does an Ion with that setup at 10.5 lbs...

Still need to look at some other motors, I kind of figured I'd wait until I had made some changes to the frames, but maybe I'll just go ahead and try them now as I have them on hand.

Has Hacker ever finished there outrunner? Is it cool? As good or better then the Actro?

Well they need to be able to supply the Ion-X motors first. :(

Still waiting on mine to come back from repair.
Going to call and find out what is going on today....

I saw the Proton 50 prototype 3 flying at IRCHA SE this weekend. It is AWESOME!! I got a little flying video I will post once I get it captured and stuff. There was a TON of interest in this new little machine.

What a great design!! Sweet Chris!!!
Can't wait to get me one of those Proton 50's!

Nice Heli but they need to get the weight down. My concern is that it has all the 90 size parts head, main shaft and so on. They did the same thing on the last 50 sized nitro and it was a beast.

"Nice Heli but they need to get the weight down"

We are very aware of this and are targeting a much lower weight. The heli will not be produced if certain parameters cannot be met and that is one of them. Currently it is 7lbs 5 oz without a canopy. We think we can get it under 7lbs with a canopy.

On thing I notice about this helicopter from talking to Chris that sets it VASTLY apart from the Fury 50.

This helicopter is using the SAME power system as the Ion at almost 3lbs less.
To me I could care less if it was lighter that in itself is going to give you a big performance increase.
However I know Chris's goal is to make the BEST true 50 sized production electric out there so I am sure the end product whatever the weight will work well.

Chris,

Great news. I’m a diehard fan of MA but did not want some 8.5lb 50 size beast. Can’t wait to see the end product, may have to get one.

I'm still trying to pick my jaw up off the ground after seeing this thing fly at IRCHA SE. This will ROCK the electric world in this size class of electric helis. Again, nice work Chris!

Anything new on the Ion 50 yet?

I have actually had very little to do with that machine lately since Tim took it over. I know he has changed it radically from what I did, he wanted it to use both electric and liquid power along with a few other design changes. He is plugging away at it but there is just no way for me to tell when it will get kitted.

Ooooohhhhh..
Just don't let him design the tailbox. :D :D :D

Should be interesting if he is looking a liquid and electrons.

Can't wait...

chris, can you tell us what motor, esc and battery config. will be required for this new ION. What do you guesstimate the cost being for these components.
Thanks,
Jeff

hacker ESC , same as Ion , motor , all types , 24-4 series actros , nue motor might work , 1912 , MIGHT!! , kontronics 45 series , 10s2p , ?? on the battery config. like the ion 2 5s packs . or a single 10s2p stick

Tony is right, essentually the same motor as an Ion would use, and you can use smaller motors for "sport" setups. The speed control can be cut back a little, I have been using a Schultze 32-55 on the proto, a Hacker 48-3P would do well as would a number of others. The battery is about half what the Ion uses, in number of cells. You can fly the thing on 6, 8, 10 and I'm sure 12S, just parallel the cells so that you use somewhere from 18 to 24 cells total... so 6S3P (2 X 3S3P), 8S3P (2 X 4S3P), 10S2P (2 X 5S2P) 12S2P (2 X 6S2P).

And of course as time is going on those numbers are shuffling around a bit (there are good things happening with batteries this year). I am supposed to get a pair of 5S1P 3200?mAHr packs to try on it. The cells are rated 20C continuous and 30C peak so they should do well. The new TP 2100 ProLite cells may well reduce those "P" numbers as well.

Chris,
I want to try some of those Dewalt packs.. They sound REALLY cool!
The Ion 50 would be a great ship for a set of those I think...

I do hope this one comes out as my friends have been giving me a very hard time at the field, saying that I need to get a descent 50 class 'liquid' heli to practice with. I'd rather stick to 'E' power and this class Ion opens the doors to some great possibilities for me as I already have enough batteries to fly this size heli all day long.

Maybe we could make the heli so that you could just plug drill packs in!

Now your thinking. :D

Course somehow I don't think that idea came about just from my suggestion. :D :D :D

I don't know if I am supposed to say this or not, but I saw the new 50 Tail Box, that was carbon and SUPER SIMPLE and SUPER Light at Clint's B-Day! Tim had it with him and it was awesome! Can't wait to get my hands on one!!!

Would it be possible to use standard size servos in this thing? It would be desirable as I got some 9252's laying around.

G'day Mates,

Just my opinion, but I think that the whole idea of an Ion-50 is a bad one.

The current Ion-x is already a world-beater. MA should be working on improving it for both F3C and 3D competitions.

An Ion-30 would make more sense, as it would take on the Logo 14 and allow current Ion-x owners to 'split packs'.

Cheers,

Tom C
