mosesmick,
The original battery pack included with the radio is a "Sanyo" Model 8N-600AA,
This is a 9.6 volt, 600mAh, Ni-Cd, " stick " pack.
I hardly ever use my original pack anymore. But I do keep it charged and use it for set ups and tweeking aircraft.
I now use a " Commonsense RC Batteries " , 2100 mAh, 3 cell, 12.5 volt Li-Po battery pack. It fits perfectly in RD8000 and RD6000 series radios. I'v been useing it for 2-1/2 years and it now charges up to 12.3v rather than 12.5v, after this amount of time. I charge it at 1000 mAh as per their recommendation. I'm quite pleased with the service and longevity.
Ask for a "JR" male plug. And also if I recall correctly you will need to swap the wires around in the plug. Mine came with the black ( - ) wire on the outside and the red ( + ) in the center of the plug. You want the red outside and black in the center.
With a blade lift the small tab holding a wire pin. Remove it. Put some tape on it to prevent accidental "shorting" . Then remove the next one and reinsert them as above.
I hope this is of some small help.

Thanks for the great advice, im weighing up weather to keep this radio (given to me) or upgrade to a 2.4 gig one.
Might cost more now but be of better use later.
