View Full Version : Why do the Scale Helis in Phoenix all have "rate" gyros?

Why do all the Scale helicopters in Phoenix have "Rate" gyros instead of Heading Hold? Does anyone actually still only use a rate gyro on a helicopter today? I have never used a Rate gyro from day one, so the tail just feels so squirrelly. I've had to edit and save all the scale helicopters with my own variant to use Heading Hold gyros. I just wish there was a way to edit the "default" model to use heading hold gyros instead.

because a real heli would not have heading hold, and being that they are "scale" models, they should behave the same as the real thing.

If you want to be really accurate, real helicopters do not have ANY gyros at all.. So, shouldn't that mean that "Scale" helicopters should be flown without gyros? ;)

well strictly speaking a real heli will weather vane, and the tail will follow the heli in fff, so technically a rate gyro is just making it behave like a scale heli ;)

I prefer rate gyros. The concept of control harmony goes out the window with HH gyros (for me at least), especially when one is used to planes. I much prefer the aerodynamics to run it's course than have HH counter the natural yaw characteristics. Fast backwards flight and whacky 3D stuff is a different issue of course.

it takes more skill to fly HH realistically. you have to use both hands in harmony. I now can't fly in rate mode worth a crap, some say i can't fly anything worth a crap. Ron

You guys need to try flying without a gyro at all, like the old days, just set up the bird neutral and get ready for some fun.

I agree with DJ and Jamiem. I fly my birds in both RATE and HH. With a scale body on a 450 even the difference becomes obvious.

Real helis have what I like to call a podiatry assisted optical ass-gyro... Your feet respond to what your eyes and your ass are telling you while you're in the cockpit. Kinda difficult to do with a model, scale or otherwise...

...podiatry assisted optical ass-gyro...
Aha, so that's the professional term :D
It sounds like you may have some time on full-size(?)

I reckon the rate gyro gives me some of the experience of the PAOAG system, in that I do have to react to optical stimuli, just swapping podia for hands and ass-gyro for getting your ass around to correct for unwanted gyration in time.
