Check this out it charges my 1400 mah to 5.1v while i fly it plugs in a aux channel so if i have a battery failure it by passes and flys off the generator samething happends if my switch fails and if my generator fails i have a full charge to bring it home to daddy. its a axi out runner motor :glasses: and it will fly with the switch off (3D) forgot to turn switch on

That is really REALLY cool! Besides the out runner what do the electronics look like?? Custom or did you purchase them from somewhere? This is really a no brainer idea and makes total sense if it doen't add too much weight. Please give us a bit more details!! Great post!

Its a Axi motor mounted to the top start of a Spectra G. Its a 6v system regulated down to 5.2v. It plugs in the aux channel on the RX and the whole set up is 4oz a 1400mah JR pack is more.. so lose the back up battery or run a smaller battery. Its called "RAJAS JEWEL" he sells them for $200.00 and he will make it any output you want. Think about it ....Never worry about charging the nite before show up with low or dead batterys and still fly you will run out of gas and daylite but not battery charge (i think it would be great for you camera wizard guys) :glasses2:

I remember your post on RR when you flew with the SW off. Pretty cool system but I like to use my top start on the Spectra.
Do you think if it was driven off of the main gear it would still do the job? Seems like if it was and you forgot to turn the SW ON it wouldn't have any control input to advance the throttle and supply power so there would be no SW mix up. ;) But, it would still charge the system in flight.

Hey guys:
Yes this generator is a great system. Actually its much more powerful than the stock genesys system which is 800mah output. With this unit you can pull 5+ amps -- I think the motor can handle even more but the regulator is limited to 3 amps continuous 5 amps burst for 5 minutes otherwise it will overheat.
The best thing about this system is that you DON'T have to charge. I am going to Maine this weekend for the holidays and the heli goes in the trunk when I leave, and stays there for the entire trip. I just pull it out wherever I find a field or club to fly and I never have to do that "embarassing" walk into the hotel room with it at night so I can charge it in the hotel room while I sleep. A couple of weeks back I went to Montreal for the weekend and did just that.
Nowadays I just charge my TX when I need it (every about 12 to 15 flights and before I go on a trip) and top off my heli at that time. Great little system and well worth it. I had my doubts about "keeping it simple" but once I put it on I decided I should have done it alot sooner. Now I don't like to fly without it. It gives that relaxing feeling of no battery worries when I fly, kind of the same feeling you get when you fly with a neckstrap instead of without (no fear of dropping the TX in flight). Maybe you guys never got that feeling, but some of you might have and will know exactly what I mean.
Anyway, yes I am making them for people and selling them for $200. See them at : http://www.massheli.com/gallery/raja
I am in the process of making 6 units right now, 4 are sold, as of now two are still available. Let me know if you want one of these from the current production run.

Update:
The above is a cut and paste from another section. Maine was great, put in 8 flights while I was away and the rx battery stayed at 5.1v. All the units I had are sold, but yesterday I ordered 6 more motors plus the electronics and I will build 6 more -- should be ready probably next Friday. I can send some out on Saturday the 16th, after that on Sunday I am off to Chicago for a week and I won't be around to ship any out until 7/25.

I never have to do it to charge, but I have been known to blow a few chunks then CRAWL to the room... Not a pretty sight at all....
The generator idea is pretty cool, but like Nolan, I also top start everything. You gonna make units that don't have to go on teh start shaft?

rbort,
I am so interested in this generator setup!
The problem is that I have a X-Cell .60 Graphite Custom SE and I need to use the top shaft to start the engine.
Is there any way around this?
I'm thinking of a mount to hold the generator to the top frame and use the same gear the clutch has but this would be dependent on the rotor speed, not the constant running speed the engine is providing (at idle clutch would be disgaged and there would be no charging taking place at idle)
70% of my downtime is charging every time I want to fly and that's a big time waster for me, with this I could fly for hours and the only factor would be the fuel supply I brought :D
Anyways I'd like to purchase your system for my X-Cell .60 Graphite Custom SE but how would I start it? It has a O.S. .61 SX-WC with a ntiro pipe.

SOLD! Sent one off to ya today! Once you get it setup put some pictures here for other nitro folks. I am working on gasser mounts for the MinAir helis, and once I get that in production I will look into nitro heli mounts.
