Hey all,
Last night I was setting up my Blade CP for all separates with a Brushless motor and Brushed tail motor (GWS direct drive).

I am pretty sure I had everything set up properly. I have and 18amp brushless ESC for the main and the GWS100li 5amp brushed ESC for the tail. I soldered the battery leads from the brushless ESC and the leads from the brushed ESC to the same Deans plug. I then hooked everything up. I connected the battery and I heard the expected beeps for an ESC to arm. I did a quick control check and the swash was moving great. So I then gave it some throttle and the main spun up as expected. I then gave it left rudder to arm the tail esc. I then gave it some right rudder and the tail spun up like a bat out of hell and the ESC started smoking. I immediately lowered throttle, but the tail was still motor was still spinning crazy. I finally was able to get the battery unplugged but not before the brushed ESC was on fire! Yes, literally, a flame was shooting out of it!

What went wrong? I am using a 3 cell 1350mah 15c battery.

Thanks,
Skarn

I am no expert by any means but it sounds like you hooked everrything up right but when the tail went crazy you should have given it left rudder to slow/stop it sounds like you just worked that little esc too hard. I know on my HBFP brushless the tail will operate independant from the main rotor on the ground, when I land I have to immediately input left rudder trim all the way over to make the tail blade stop spinning if I dont you can hear in spinning and getting faster and faster if untouched.

Hope that sheds some light on it, maybe a bigger rating esc will help too ???

I think I figured it out. I forgot to cut the tail esc BEC wire! So I had both BECs enabled and from what I've read, they don't like that!
