I know that my 6ex Fasst radio doesnt have all the bells and whistles, but will this be a decent radio for a nitro copter? I have a Trex 450 now, but would like to try nitro in the future. Also do I need to purchase a governor when going to nitro or can I just adjust my throttle settings??

You won't be able to use all the capabilities of the gov with only 6 channels you need 7 to command the gov to hcange headspeeds with different fligh tmodes.
But you don't have to have a gov.

Can I use a 6 channel radio effectively for nitro? Or is 7 channels a must??

If you wanta gov that changes head speed from Normal to Idle up, you need 7 channels.
If you are happy with throttle curves, you can fly with 6.

if the 6ex series had sub-trim, i'd be happy with mine. not having that one feature kinda makes it a shite tx for helis. it's so much easier to setup the head with subtrim. the ratchet on the throttle stick is fixable. that being said, you can likely sell your 6ex and rx's and likely get almost all the $ you need for a dx7 or similar 7ch 2.4g tx. i'm stuck where you are right now, as i really don't think i'll ever go nitro (i'll leave that to my mt's). having said that, every time i've gone the cheaper/lesser route i've kicked myself in the ass for it later. so i've got to decide, either a dx7 (www.thebarnfloor.com (http://www.thebarnfloor.com)), or an airtronics rds8000 (pretty inexpensive) or a futaba 7c.

I used a 6EX FASST on my electric micros. When I got a nitro heli, I used the same radio. It was okay but not all that easy to set up given the radio's limitations. Moreover, it only has one idle-up setting. That was fine for training, when I flew mostly in normal mode and one idle-up setting was sufficient. Then the time came when I upgraded to an aerobatic heli and needed IDLE-2. So I had to purchase a more capable radio.

As for being a decent radio for a nitro heli. A 6EX 2.4ghz is what Danny Szabo used at the XFC 2007. Didn't seem to hinder his flying any.

I use a 6EX 2.4 for my electric and my gasser with no problems. You can setup a govenor using throttle position to engage instead of channel 7. I think I am going to upgrade to a Futaba 7c 2.4 though....

i've been chewing that one over for a while now. well, today i bit the bullet and ordered the 7c fasst heli version and a 2nd rx for it. woot!! although the programming will be a bit harder to learn i think, in the end i know i'll be happy with it. at first i thought of a way to save a few bucks seeing as how i only need 6 channels right now (no nitros- yet). i figured i'd just order a 6ex fasst rx as the extra rx. well, that's not gonna happen being that the 6 channel fasst tx's use the 7 channel rx's! oh, well. anyone know if there is a video explaining how to program the 7c, or is it not much different then the 6ex 72mhz?
