View Full Version : Tail Wagging with 401

I've got a little bit of a wag with a T-Rex, 401 and 7C radio.
Under the gyro settings (those of you who are familiar with this radio) I have the gyro set to change settings with my "G" switch. In the up mode (which is my normal flight mode) I have it set to the A setting and 7%. Now, I don't really know the difference between the A and the N. After you go to 0% on A and keep going the same direction, it will go up in the N.
Well, my helicopter guy that I usually go to, says I should be able to get 75% in normal heading hold.
Is there something on the gyro or radio that I can change.
I might add that I have the gyro at the very back under the little blue piece of metal, right as the tail boom begins. It's pretty secure with a velcro strap completely holding it.
Could I move it. Radio problems. Gyro Problems.
Any suggestions?
Thanks Alot

one problem might be the velcro strap. you should be mounting it with double sided foam tape. or zeal tape if you have it.

Well I don't have any zeal tape, nor have I never heard of it.
Currently, I'm not sure where to put it. I have the gyro where I said it was, the reciever is in the back part of the bottom plate and the ESC and battery are all up front.
I'm not sure how I can re-arrange everything where I have the gyro in place of where the reciever is right now and hopefully that will solve it. I was thinking it was pretty tight back there, but I'm sure anything vibration, especially from an electric, will have a great effect on it.
Thanks

The 'A' indicates AVCS mode, otherwise known as Heading Hold. The 'N' indicates Normal mode, otherwise known as rate mode. To verify that the gyro mode agrees with the radio's indication, does the gyro correctly initialize with the screen indicating 'A'?
The GY401 must be turned on with the gain setting in the AVCS region of adjustment. The red LED should go solid after initialization. If it blinks after initialization, then the gyro was powered up with the gain in the Normal mode.
A gain setting of 7% is ultra low and will not provide any hold on the tail.
What servo are you using? You may need to increase the Delay setting on the gyro.
Thanks,
John

I am using a HS-81 from Hitec. It's great little servo.
I know about the LED light and that comes on fine. I must have had it backward. I must have it in the A (heading hold). I figured that out just by reading the manual. Those manuals will do wonders if you don't know what you're doing.
Anyways, I got everything set under "A" but at 7%, it does hold, a little bit, but just acts funny and that wag is still there.
Is there anything in the gyro that can be changed. Delay, Limit. I'm sure those have nothing to do with it but nothing else seems to be working.
Thanks for the help

7 percent is extremely low, you should be somewhere around A40 to A65 depending on your setup.
Delay has nothing to do with what your heli does in a hover, to properly set delay you do a full piro and let go hard at the end, if the tail bounces you slowly turn up the delay until it stops cleanly.
Indeed. Deleted my incorrect response.

I am going to have tomorow off, so I will have to mess with that and see what I can come up with.
I'll let ya know.
Thanks for all the help so far
