View Full Version : ds285 Cyclic Servos - Aileron, Pitch linkage?

I finally got around to adding 285's and while I haven't left the ground with them, they seem to be much quicker and more responsive, stronger as well.

The 285 servos themselves went in to the frame with no modification at all, a direct replacement. Though the throttle/elev servo required the JR 3" extension to reach the Rx.

The servo horns of course have to be replaced, and that is where I ran in to difficulty.

Throttle/elev servo horn was the easiest, just put the ball links on the inside of the horn to get the straightest throw:

The pitch and aileron servos however gave me some trouble. The trouble being I can't get the throw angle to be straight, the linkage rods are kicked out a few degrees:

If I were to put the ball links on the inside of the servo horn then the angle is off in the other direction and may possibly bind easier than if the links are on the outside of the horn. What did everybody else do here?

My pitch seems to have changed towards the negative side since doing this.
Sokal when you installed these did you have to adjust much in the Tx settings? Did you do any linkage twists or just change subtrim/trim?

I have them too and did not have to mess with anything.

Did your pitch values change?

You say you did not touch any settings in the radio either?

I got a TRex 450 swash leveling tool to level the swash at center stick, max positive pitch and max negative pitch. It's nice to be able to go out and fly and not need any trim changes.

I'll give these a shot tomorrow, thanks.

the reason is if u put in the aile or elev input the flybar cage hit the blade grips
so adj your so that thiers a hair line left and that will be you #'s

to check put blades over the canopy and tail and check elev and adj
for aile put blade perpendicular to canopy and blades

acuate the controls full in one direction if servos buzz then drop the amout till thiers space
then check both sides if not the same a mechanical adj may be needed or endpoints

Im gonna be adding this servo pack to my B400 real soon cause its in the mail. Greenbar do you have any tips for an easier install and less down time. Any advice from anyone would be great. I dont want to jack anything up!

you will need a 3' extension wire for the elevator servo. other than that plop 'em in and go fly

Okay center them first if you want to go the easy route :D

The 285's are a great upgrade. Take a look at the pics and read sokal's last post for a better understanding of what you are looking for in the setup.

You don't necessarily have to adjust much in the head. You can attempt to put the servos in and then use the stock head settings (link lengths), but you might want a pitch gauge just to make sure everything is setup correctly.

I'd definitely recommend checking swash plate level at low, mid and high, after installing the new servos.

GreenBar  haven't you read that thread about the stickers on the motor????

they come unstuck real easy, one guy had a bad crash as it got caught in the swash linkage :DOH others just had the air they breath scared out of them by the noise

i'd pull that sticker off ya motor if i was you ;)

cheers chuck

I just press my battery up against the motor in order to glue the sticker back down, works like a charm :Fan.
