I just got my Hurricane and need to know what is a good BEC to go with the stock motor and ESC.
Also hope this doesn't sound stupid but I've never used a BEC, does it use a separate battery?

A BEC does what it's name says. Battery Eliminating Circuit. Therefore a BEC does not have a seperate battery but provides power to the RX/Servos from the motor battery.
The industry does get it wrong by calling a voltage regulator, like the one in the standard Hurricane, which use a 2cell Lipo and is definately not a BEC, but a VOLTAGE REGULATOR. :arggg:
If you want to save weight then go for a BEC. More than 6 cells you have to get an UBEC (ultra), which is normally a switching power supply to drive the flight pack from such high supply voltages.

ya know.. I've wanted to correct sooooooo many people for calling it a BEC.. I remember back when BEC's came around for electric buggies.. it was the best invention ever, it allowed me to get rid of that receiver battery pack. then I get into Heli's and see people adding a battery and calling it a BEC??? But you're right, it's the industry that has it wrong.. that just trickles down to the rest of us.

for what is always referred to as a BEC, align 75a seems like a good one

Another benifit of the regulator and flight pack battery is you can make all the servo and set up adjustments you want....and NEVER have to worry about the motor or blades starting up.
I just added the CNC aileron arms and palyed for about 45 minutes making servo adjustments....can't do that if you use a BEC.
Also.....the flight times are short enough without pulling more out for the flight pack.
I use a TP1320 2 cell pack and i usually get 4 flights totalling 25 - 30 minutes and barely have one light go out on the regulator....i think I measured about 375 mah going back in after a morning flying.
I love the BEC on my planks....but feel much better with the regulator on the Hurri.
I do use a BEC on my ECO8 and it works well...

A 75 A Bec :thinking , Align must anticipate serious servos to power their helo's head.!!!!!
Maybe you refered to the ESC, which by the way does not have a BEC built in.

If you want to make adjutments, just unplug the BEC and plug in any RX battery or for that matter any battery, voltage regulator combination.

Thanks for setting me straight on the bec, now it makes sense. Sometime the manufacturers don't make this stuff too clear.

DOH.. you're right... it was late.. 75a is the ESC and the Align "BEC" is a good one to look at (or use the Gaui one since it's the same)

i use the align 3 amp bec (no, regulator lol) with a 2100mah 2 cell lipo. the electrifly 2100 2 cell fits perfectly underneath the plastic frame of the 550, and with a velco strap it's perfect! i didn't do that on purpose either, just ordered the packs and turns out it's like they were made for this frame!

Hobbywing makes a very nice UBEC, 5A with 7,5A max, Input up to 42V (10cell lipo). Using it on my E550 and Hurricane, saving weight.

I use a Dimension Engineering SportBEC on mine.

I always wire in a Micro Deans between the BEC and the main Deans that hooks to the packs. That way I can power the electronics with a small pack without powering up the ESC. So no chance of motor turning. I run this setup on my Hurry, my Quick of Japan EP8, and my Trex 450.

I put a castle creations bec in my heli. I like CC because that's what I have for esc, in my other heli's. I can adjust the voltage to any level using the castle link! Plus it's on sale for $19 right now. only downside is it can't be used above 6s but that's no big deal for me since that's what I use.

I use a Hyperion TiCool SBEC - 4 amps continuous and 5 amp bursts. Switchable 5v/6v output and you can use it with packs between 3S and 10S. It's worked very well on my 10S Hurri.
So here is the thing... I have it wired into my battery connectors (for the flight battery) so I guess it's a "BEC" - it is a circuit that eliminates the need for a separate Rx battery.
But if I ran it off a separate 3S pack then would that make it a "Regulator"?

Exactly correct, BEC = no battery, SEPERATE BATTERY = V Regulator. :)

I am using the Medusa 2.5a 5/6 volt BEC, up to 10s, no switches. What are the switches used on other BECs?

Mine selects 5v or 6v output

the hobby wing 7.5 has the 5 or 6 volt option. I thought I wanted it to run the main shaft servos at six volts and it came with a regulator (diode) to drop the tail servo to 5v. For what I do I could probably run everything at 5v. I already run expo on both cyclics. Like I need faster servos.
I do like just plugging a battery into to the bec to power servos. Nice and safe. Can't do that on my rex 450's.
