I have a HBK2 which the stock ESC died nearly out of the box. So replacing it with another stock esc would be kinda stupid, but I will buy another as a backup to the brushless motor and esc I ordered.
So my question is... What are the Emax programmable esc's like?? Are they total junk, stay away. Or are they a tad better than the stock esc's coming with the birds??
I'm not into upgrading the HB to the max just yet. I'd like to learn to fly the thing before I get to excited on tweeking.
So are the Emax's and acceptable esc unit or is there a better one I should be looking at??
Thx

The 40A has a nice 3A BEC, and the programming card is REALLY easy to use.
One thing I like about ESCs with program cards is that you don't need your PC with you if you need to change some settings ;)

If you are using the stock motor, solder a 15 amp automotive mini fuse in series to the red wire of the motor, this prevents you from blowing out your ESC. The fuse will blow first before the ESC burns up. The soft start on the E-max ESC's don't really work well with any outrunner motor. The align ones have a great soft start feature.

Will I need to do this with a 3900kv brushless motor and esc(which is coming)??
Should I do it, with a brushless set, for a safety factor even tho I may not have to put in a fuse??
The esc I have been trying to get, programmable, is a 30 amp... maybe a 30amp inline fuse regardless of motor would be good, no??

No fuse on a brushless system...doesn't work that way.

you can't put a fuse battery side?

You could if you wanted to lose all control when it blew. :D
That would cut all power to the radio and everything, most ESC's have an overtemp feature built in that will shut them down before they melt anyway. I've heard of them not working for sure, melted shrink wrap and even desoldered components with no shut down, but it's a lot better than a fuse blowing and sending you out of control.
I've used several of the Emax ESC's in planks and I love the things. Dirt cheap, easy to program, no issues so far, and I love the way they play music when they arm. Actually it annoys the hell out of me but I leave it turned on because I like watching everyone reach for their cell phones when I plug in my battery, LOL. ;)
