I just got a 30 v1 i picked it up used.... so far i really like it... but i would like a 90 size heli .. am i crazy for wanting to go from a 30 to a 90?

fly the 30, its MUCH cheaper on parts and fuel than a 90, when you outgrow the 30 then you can go where you wish, i would still stick to a 50 as they are much more cost effective. They are only a little bit bigger in size than the 30, they have tons of power to do hard 3d, they only use a little bit more fuel than the 30, and the parts are only a few bucks more.

I went from a Blade 400 to a Raptor 60 with a YS 80. Other than the major pucker factor with the 60, they fly about the same with regards to performance vs size.

HOWEVER, I wish I'd gotten a 50 after watching the YS 80 drink a tank of fuel in 6 minutes, and I'm not overly aggressive with the bird yet... Also, its not the fuel cost that bothers me, its the limited flight time.. I get 6 -10 minutes on my Blade 400, depending on aggression level. I seem to get 6 - 7 minutes on the Raptor, I was really hoping for a little longer flight times...

Yup I zipped through a tank on a tt70 just tuning it. I love the power and the size but the cost is up there. It comes down to are you ready and can you afford it.

I have a Raptor 90 and it can drink up the fuel but with proper tuning you can get your flight times in the 10 minute range easily if you aren't super aggressive and fly smoothly.

I've run many 10 minute flights with a 91Cspec pump engine. I expect to get more flight time after the carbsmart install. The RC heli mag guys claimed %30 better fuel consumption with carb smart. That puts 13 to 14 minute flight times within reach, I'll report back.

Lota Fun R,

I read that article in RC-heli also and one thing that has me worried is how lean they had to have the engine before the carb smart would work. Do you think it would be smart to wait for a follow up or a few more reviews or do you think the carb smart is safe to use? Also, with the problems RC-heli mag had installing the sensor, has anyone heard if the people who make the carb smart are revamping it?

I am in possession of a Carbsmart :) However, I'm also in the possession of one failed piston that I found when I pulled the head to install the Carbsmart :wow2:

41941

So, I'm going to go out on a limb and say having a complete piston should improve fuel economy. Having a fully functional Carbsmart should also make life much nicer...

Will report back once parts arrive on Tuesday.. (Currently chastising myself for not pulling the head Wednesday night instead of screwing off behind the computer. If I had pulled the head on Wednesday, I would have ordreded the parts over night on Thursday for Friday delivery, and wouldn't be sitting here talking about Carbsmart, I'd be out flying with Carbsmart :arggg:

Hows the rest of the engine James? I guess you need a new liner and ring too.

OUCH, Whenever my piston got like that the engine wouldnt start due to lack of compression:dontknow. I'm surprised you didn't know till you took it apart.

Please do let us know how the carb smart works out for you. What engine is it your putting it on?

Carb Smart: I agree that it seems to be a bit high on the temps however 100C is 212F and my 91 Cspec is supposed to be no hotter than 220F and the smaller engines run hotter so the 100C is intended for the 90 engines.

They were breaking the sensor by forcing it in, mix up some compound and glue it on, no force and you won't break it.

I hear what you're saying about setting at lower temps, that would be nice....but I also like the idea of running my engine at it's peak performance. You still need to get the needle that is not controlled set perfect though.

I think the Carb Smart is just the tip of the iceberg, we will see more stuff along these lines. 02 sensor next?

I seized my C spec before I did any mods to it, it is a must to do the cat eye mod or just buy the new control valve, I bought the control valve and went from seizing it up at 1 & 3/4 turns out, to 180F run temps at 1 & 1/8th turns out on the main. The low and mid is really lean stock.

Bottom end is tight, conn rod looks fine. I have a new liner / piston / ring combo, Gasket set, and wrist pin retaining clips on the way from Ron's heliproz. $135, not that bad all things considered...

Liner was a PITA to get out, the exhaust port had some dings in it when the metal bits exited the airframe. Once I got the exhaust port liner dings cleaned up, the "stick it in the oven" trick worked as expected..

I expect to have the motor together by Tuesday afternoon, and maybe get a flight on it Tuesday evening if all goes well.
