Hi,
This is my first post on Helifreak.:o I am very new to nitro heli's. Yesterday made my 3rd day hovering a nitro heli.:YeaBaby: I am having a problem with my clutch on the main rotor slipping. (I think):thinking. When I spool it up sometimes the head does not come up to speed. I can usually throttle back and go at it again. Yesterday one time however it took for ever to spool up. Can any one tell me how to fix this problem? Please ask any pertinent questions.
Thanks Alan

Are you saying the engine sounds like it comes up to speed but the rotors don't? Are you sure it's the clutch slipping? It is possible the one way bearing (between the main gear and main shaft) is slipping. A good indicator that it's the clutch is to feel the side of the clutch bell when it doesn't seem to spool up to speed. If the bell is hot and you see a lot of black dust around the fan shroud then the clutch liner may need replacement. Hold the main gear while trying to turn the rotorhead counter clockwise (looking from the top). If you can turn the rotors without the main gear rotating then the oneway maybe the problem.

Thanks for your reply. I'll try your suggestion. This is a brand new heli. It has only been flown about five times ( about four tanks each time ). When it spools up it just does not get enough head speed to lift off. It tries but just does not. If I keep wiggling the sticks eventually it gets enough head speed to lift off.

well then from what you just described, it may not be a drive train problem at all. you may not be getting enough consistent headspeed to lift off caused by....engine not tuned properly, throttle and pitch curves not set right, etc.... After you get it to hover for 1 or 2 minutes and then land, put your finger on the backplate of the engine to see if it is overheating. should be able to hold your finger on the plate for minimum 4-5 seconds. Make sure you check it immediately after lending and spooling down. This would be the first thing I would check. If the engine is overheating due to tuneing issues or throttle/pitch setup you can permenantly damage the engine. BTW, I fly the same setup you have except I use an os37 engine. Setup properly the heli should lift off consistently at the same stick position.

The guy that set it up for me told me the same thing as you. I can hold my finger there and tell it is hot, but not hot enough to burn my finger. I am running the Webra engine suggest by horizon hobby. It is brand new and still breaking in. Currently it has one gallon run through it. I am running it rich right now. I have leaned it out some since its first few flights, but right now I am scared to lean it out any more. I have plenty of smoke when it is flying. No skeeters here. When it spools up the take off point on the sticks is about the same. I do know that he has a low pitch setting for me right now since I am still learning. That seems to be a good thing as I have not had to replace anything on it since I got it back. I can't complain about my set up the turn key heli was only $250.00 at my LHS. (Heli, 6102 radio and receiver, servos, battery, and engine.) I never thought I would like a nitro heli, but the more I fly it the better I like it. It will probably be that way until the first crash.

Thanks for all the help.
Alan

For got to say it came with a JR 500 T gyro.

You got a great deal! I paid $360 for mine 2 years ago with everything but a tx. That was used and I thought it was a good deal back then. Can't beat $250 rtf/new with a stick. I flew 400 size electrics at first and when i switched to the venture it was so much easier to handle. I've progressed to loops/rolls/flips and some sustained inverted. It's a great trainer heli. Very common problem with nitro helis is the lean run..fry the engine. Keep a close eye on that and you should get a lot of airtime with the venture.
