View Full Version : When should I start to use Idle Up?
Nevermind, instead could someone tell me how to embed a youtube video so I can try this again, I can't figure it out on my own.

Do you think I'm ready for Idle Up? Would it make my hovering more stable? In the vid I didn't mean to have all the touchdowns, it's just that in normal mode when you go to midstick it reduces the power a lot.

The sim is helping a lot though, before all of the sim practice this would have ended in a nasty crash. The only time I crashed the Blade 400 was in a very similar situation.
As I sit here typing this, I can see my unfinished Trex 600 across the room, and I really hope in a month when it is ready to fly, I will be ready to fly it too.
I always fly in idle up on the sim, should I try it for real, or continue practicing as I am now?

looks like you have very good control touch
and look like you are ready for stunt
you will find that with the headspead not changing as much will have better control of the collective
and not yoyo as much
thing about stunt remember you have - pitch and will push the heli down
know where the thro hold switch is and can flip it in moments notice(in case of crash)
and its recommended to switch to stunt in a hover(i do mine on the ground)
with a constant head speed every thing will be that much more sensitive
and do a lili hover in stunt so you can familirize your self with its new reaction
gyro gain may change not much
my thro curve is 100-95-90-95-100
not as drastic as a head speed change as stock 100-92.5-80-92.5-100
but our ready bro

also flight time will decrease
watch for it
sokal, thanks for the encouragement, I still am shaking at the end of every flight. But if the higher headspeed will keep it more stable I think I will try it out. I am used to it on the sim and will not go below half stick into negative pitch, I have practiced a lot.
I also think I will change my throttle curve like yours. How much shorter will my flight time be in Idle Up, right now I have my countdown timer set for 7 minutes, which never seems to overdisharge my battery. I'm using the stock 1800mah batt. Do you think I would be safe at 5 min. in Idle Up?
Thanks for your help and encouragement, I'm feeling better about trying it now.

i run about 6min with the 1800
if u are shakey at the end of your flight be very careful going in to stunt
just take it slow BREATH and you will do fine
just feel it out first do what your doing now hover work
if u feel you hover is goo try move fw and back towards you
keeping same Altatude then side to side
also one thing iv found that i did that helped
dont pay all your attention to the rotor blades for you refrence use every thing
Skids, tail, body, rotor will help you in fwd flight
also practice side hover both sides
this will help in your confedence to move on and calm down
Relax your doing Great:clappp
Thanks again, actually I do look at the whole heli, cause I can barely see the align carbon blades I have on it unless they catch the sun. I switched to these blades after my first crash because the lhs was out of the stock ones. I haven't switched back yet because I have not crashed again, and I like the way these fly, they seem to go through the air better if that makes any sense to you, but they are hard to see.
Here is a couple of minutes of me on G4 doin stuff I would never think about in real life all in Idle Up mode of course.

How much longer before you think I am ready for any of it, I never get nervous on G4 but that's because it costs nothing to crash on a sim, no money or frustration or rebuilding, just press the little red button.
Also, is it possible to remove the rachet from the G4 controller? That way it would be more realistic and help with collective control when using rudder.

I use my DX6i with RealFlight G4, you like the Interlink controller better?

Hey sd0, maybe a good stepping stone before going total stunt mode is to increase your throttle curve in normal mode, just a suggestion. Mine is set as 0-0-70-85-100

doing great, if you want take the back off the G4 Transmitter. if it's similar to the G3 Transmitter all you do is unscrew the metal flat spring and flip it over and tighten it back up. Screw the back on and your ready to go. Having said that it's always better to use your transmitter as it will feel different than the G4 Transmitter does.
Thanks I will try changing my Normal Mode thottle curve as a couple people have suggested to try to get rid of the "yoyo" effect, and tonight I will also try to use my DX6i on the sim, I have been wanting to do that anyway.

int2str, a member here, made the best and easiest to follow guide for setting up the DX6i with G4.
Here it is:

DX6i on RealFlight - for Airplanes -> http://ironcreek.net/dx6i/plane.php

I was using the normal throttle curve that came with the heli for a while. I definately delt with the yoyo effect all the time. I fly the heli almost every day and usually in some kind of wind. I felt I needed to start working with higher head speed if I was going to eventually get to stunts. I changed my throttle curve to 0/60/80/90/100. Remember that you should match your throttle curves so that when you go into idle up, the heli wont jump.
After changing to a higher head speed, it flew much better and the yoyo effect went away. You should watch the training videos on this subject from a user named "finless".
Ok, I set up my DX6i per the guide linked above, and I like it. Much better, feels more precise than the G4 controller. And I started flying the Trex 450 instead of the big nitro's.
This shoud help me a lot more, except for getting my nerves under control when I fly the real thing, but I think that will come with time.
Thankyou everyone for all of your help.

Somebody tipped me off to making the Trex 450 SE V2 in RealFlight, fly more like the Blade 400, they said to change the flybar length to 4.54. I just changed the value and saved the new model as "Blade 400 pass-through", and have been flying it for about an hour and I have to say that it does make the 450 feel more like the b400, a bit softer or smoother, not as precision as a 450.
In G4, the Flybar setting I changed was called Flybar Diameter, "tip to tip" was the description of the setting, the default was 12.34 or something, changed it to 4.54 per recommendation.
Cool, thanks again I will try that out.
