well because of the fact that what i'm looking for is longer flight times so i can focus on learning as opposed to constantly worrying about having to land, i said screw it and ordered a z20 980kv. all i've heard is good things about this unit, being that it's so efficient and easy on your lipos, and only $100 i said what the hell. it's replacing an rcp 18 1100kv (the 1000w version) which i notorious for being a bit of a hot runner and current hog. it's too bad too, the rcp is a powerful little motor but is eating up my KP packs in under 5 minutes. so i've got a 13t, 14t, and 15t pinion (stock gearing otherwise) and am figuring on using the 15t for both 6 cell lipo and 8 cell a123. should this work ok? should i maybe shed one cell on one of the a123 packs and make it 7 cell a123? i just have no idea what to expect from this motor power/HS wise.

the Z 20 should bring you up to 7 minutes comfortably maybe better depending on your flying style. it will be a big change from the RCP power wise, but if you did not push the RCP you may not acctually notice the power difference! give the 14t a try first! Properly setup the RCP H/18 1000w is acctually a great motor and should not run hot, Acctually I feel it is even pretty efficient for its power! the 1500w on the other hand is powerhungry and hot! I run mine every day 3-4 continous flights and can hold my motor when I am done, it's just warm. But yes the Z 20 will give much better times. if your not pushing the Hurri hard it will be perfect. NONE of the "Upgrade motors" are meant to be run on anythng less the 2500 mah packs!!! the Z-20 980 is just a very small set up from stock which does not loose any flight time so it can be run on 2100-2200mah packs. if you are running less then 25c 2500mah packs then that was your problem not the motor. but thats what is great about the Hurri, it can be set up for anyone, the problem is so often the best recomendations are not giving all the info needed for the right person!
Well, based on the change in kV alone, your headspeed would decrease by 11% if you kept the same gearing. So, to keep the same headspeed you would need to decrease your gear ratio by 11%. This is a rather simplistic view, but might be close enough.
If you are looking for longer flight times, then you want to find the lowest headspeed at which you feel the helicopter flies comfortably and gear accordingly for that headspeed, the closer to 100% throttle the better.

I agree with Concept...try the 14t first...it's what I am running and average about 1900 rpm..little more in the beginning of the pack...but power wise it's a good combo...I tried the 15t and liked the extra HS..but went back to the 14t for a while....I am really getting used to the heli and may again move back to the 15t...the HS becomes addicting....especially during loops, and such...
I may try the 20t OWB first....and see what that does for me....
But you will like the Z20...I'm running 2200 hextronics and really push them for 5 minutes..the 2500 poly's used to get me 7 - 8 min now I set for 6, again pushing a lot harder than I used to.
If your just learning FF and circuits you'll get plenty of practice with the Z motor. And you'll have cool lipos and motor to boot.

well i'll give you the rundown of the packs i'll be running. i've got 2X KP 215c 2200mah 3s1p, 2X a123 4s1p, 2X FP 3200mah evo30c 3s1p. so that's it, three sets of packs. i'll likely order a couple more FP evo 3200mah packs, being that readyheli has them for $99 in the clearance section, and you get 10% off that price also.
