View Full Version : Some baby-step assembly questions

I've flown helis, but I've NEVER assembled one, and I'm looking at my Gaui with its cryptic instructions, and I'm starting to work my way through. So these are super-baby questions.

I have HS45 servos. The arm of the pitch servo levels perfectly, but none of the holes line up perfectly beneath the swash link. Hole 2 is to far forward, and hole 3 is too far back. It appears to be too small a gap to drill another hole. What do you do? Buy more arms and hope one works?

The arm of the aileron servo aligns vertically but doesn't level perfectly. When I swap the arms I get the same results. Same question. How do you handle this?

What screws do you use to mount the servos? Do you drill pilot holes first?

What screws do you use to attach the ball links?

Sorry if these sound like girl questions. I appreciate the help.

I am on the second hole on my Hs45 seems fine to me maybe just out at 90 deg's but that angle changes as the arm moves! so at sometime during the travel it actually goes through parrallel. if you get me gis. Gives me enough movement in the servo as well.

I used the screws that came with the ball links seem to hold it just fine and have'nt had a problem. I did have to mod the tail servo bracket for the S3154 as it was catching.

Ball links screws came with the ball links, on the s3154 arm it was a job to screw it in but a bit of pressure and it wnet in I didn't need to drill.

That's one of my concerns,

Is it kosher to just screw the (machine thread) screw into the servo arm to attach the ball.

Looks a little scary to me at first glance. I'd usually like to see a nut on the other side of the plastic arm.

The pitch servo has pre-drilled mounting holes, but AILE and ELEV servos do not. Did you guys drill pilot holes? Like with a 1/32" drill?

Got my kit yesterday and all 3 cyclics had pre drilled holes for the HS45 to fit. :) Still have to mount the elev servo as I need to grind the ball as Ive seen posted here to get a straight link to the swash.

Are you saying that the frames were not drilled so that servo screws could go in? If so, I'd take a closer look ... note that the elevator servo can only go on one side (only drilled on one side).

Also, as for your servo arm question, I am using the 2nd hole (middle) on every servo on my Hurricane 200. I'm also running the same servos as you (Hitec HS-45HB).

Sorry, guys, I'm still working out my servo arm problems, sounds like good material for a newbie stickey, to me.

I'm still finishing off (good lord, I did not say that...) my TREXse, I did get the nuts about two turns on the ball screws, and locktited them. Not great, but with that and the plastic, I'll be okay. I was not really happy with just threading them into the plastic, but have yet to hear any word on that subject, except that if you thread the ball screws into the plastic, *be sure not to use loctite, or it will melt the plastic*.

Make you wonder how many times we'll have to do this......

Next time, I would get a belt sander on the servo arms and <<<slowly>>> mill them down to get a full three threads or so on the ball nuts, then the locktight, (and lockwashers, and safety wire ;-).

But I think that what I've got will work, at least I'm not dealing completely in plastic threads, so I'll take my chances. Naw, I'm pretty good at this kind of stuff, Just won't put a machine threaded bolt into the servo arm by itself until I've seen some real pro's have success at it.

So what ball-link pliers are you guys using on this tiny creature?

You know, I really am not convinced this heli really needs ball-link pliers. Considering the small size of the ball links and balls, I think it would be safer to use your fingers than some ball-link pliers.

Note: I have tried my Hobbico ball-link pliers, and they do not work (too big!!!).

I'm hoping these work: http://www.readyheli.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=RVO1005&CartID=6
they are in my cart right now.

The Gaui 200 is too small to need ball link pliers, at least for me. I think it would be too easy to break something with pliers. I can set them by hand no problem.

yeah me too. My ball link pliers are way too big, so I use my fingers.... which are also way too big.

I find I use a set of long nose pliers on some of them one side on the bottom of the ball link the other on the link they tend then just to pop off. but everything is just ssoooooo smmmmaaallll on it, I have large fingers as well and even those little brass washers are a total pain.
