View Full Version : What expo & weights are you flying with?

I've been experimenting with expo & flybar weights, thought it might be interesting to see what other people are using. For me, I found that I like:
Flybar weights:
None
Expo:
For hovering & slow forward flight: 10 expo, or 0 expo with D/R 90%
For fast forward flight and sport flying around: 20 expo
As I am trying to get better control of the gaui, I kept upping the expo, but found it harder and harder to control. So then I tried lower expo, and amazed that it was much easier (for me) with less or no expo and no weights. I usually fly my bigger helis with 20 expo, and have a hard time with little or no expo on them. So I thought I'd need a lot more for the twitchy 200, but it's opposite.
I've tested from 0 to 40 expo, and flying at least a pack through each expo test. And also tried stock, short, and no weights.
I've also found that for hovering and slow forward flight, that running my throttle curve a bit lower was a bit easier to handle (running 12c & 16c batteries with really high head speeds), but for sport flying I do like the high head speeds. It was way too windy to be flying outside today, so spent most of the day experimenting with expo in the garage. Here is a short vid:

So what expo and weights are you guys all flying with?

What radio are you using?
And are talking positive or negative expo?
On my DX7, if I dial in positive expo, I reduce sensitivity around mid stick.

Yes I am using dx7 as well, and positive expo to have less sensitivity around mid stick.
Some tx use a negative number to represent reducing of sensitivity around mid stick, but either way, I think when people mention expo, they just mean less sensitivity around center stick... never heard of anyone needing more sensitivity around mid stick than linear, but not everyone has stupid thumbs like mine :)

Hi Crabfu
Thanks for your reply.
I am surprised that you end up with such relative small expo values. I have heard about people use as much as 50% ;) You fly pretty close to the garage door as well. :YeaBaby:
One of my club mates brought his to the local heli field this weekend, and my god it is small, but amazing quality. Can't wait till I get mine.

Let me tell ya, no one could be more surprised than me to use little or no expo on this heli. I fly a trex 450 and mini titan, and I can not fly those guys with less than 20 expo. But as I was experimenting, I figured why not give it a shot, at least test it out to see what it feels like with no expo, and man... it just felt like a different heli, actually more controllable for me. Of course everyone's different, but I assume the soft dampeners, or some slop on the head, makes the 0 or very little expo work wonders for me.
When you get yours, experiment slowly with expo to find what you like. I'm just curious what others are flying with the gaui 200... In my case it's backwards from what I was expecting with expo & flybar weights :)
And yeah, got a little too close to the garage door there... I think it looked much closer in the video than it actually was, but still, closer than I intended for sure... idiot. This heli just wants to go fast, it seems like it's got 2 speeds, hover or bullet. I find it a bit challenging to do slow flights, but did went through 12 packs in the garage today and no crashes, whew... lucky if you ask me :)

Hi Peter and Crabfu.
It was me that told Peter about the 50 % Expo as a beginning, based on some setup-instructions I found at ezfly.se (only in Swedish).
I think it is too much. However, I only got 3 flights with it before it tried to eat grass :OK
Hopefully, I am up and flying again shortly (just a bent a bolt in the spindle).
However, the plastic blade might need more weights than the wood blade ?
Mine came with the plastic blades, will order the wood-blades.

Hej Bjørn - tak for sidst (Greetings in Danish) ;)
Let me know what you end up with, when you get your spare parts.
Should I order some spare parts to have readily available if/when I crash this little fellow?
If yes, which parts are most likely to give in during a crash?
T.i.a.

I am flying nothing but plastic blades, even for sport.... broke the woodies a long time ago and haven't got new ones.

if you fly inverted you should consider the wooden blades,
cause they are much stiffer and would twist less in the positive-negative pitch transiton.
everything would be smoother.

Yeah... I really should, but didn't have woodies for long before digging them into the grass. I've gotten used to the plastic blades, and I don't "fly" inverted. Only basic (ugly) flips, loops, rolls, and inverted hover nose in, that's all that I can handle right now, and you're right, I should try and get woodies for that :)
What's your expo t-driver?

i always fly my helis without expo\dual rates.
with exception some 3d planes i have.

I'd have to agree with t-driver. I have never used exponential on any of my helicopters; it makes me feel less connected to the helicopter. I have only really ever used dual rates on the tail.

Stock weights and no expo.
I think the pros take off the weights.
