I've got a 17 tooth pinion. BruceW, whats your opinion on going this low?

With a 17T your only going to get max of about 2230 on that motor and 530mm blades should probably spin around 2300+ to get good performance and snap for better 3D. Since you mentioned before that you just want it for hovering and mild FF, I think a 17T would help to give you more flying time. If your happy with how it handles, just stick with the 17T and move up later when your want more snap.

(on fresh batteries)
18T = ~2330
19T = ~2450

Just my opinion.

Sounds good to me - I'll let you all know how I go with 17 teeth.

Any ideas on what's causing the shut-down.

Over-heating or something else?

Looking back in the thread it looks like you only had thermal shutdowns while running the 22T so I'm guessing the 17T should help with that since it will be less load on the electrical system. Hopefully you don't have a defective ESC but I do think a Jazz 80 would be better in the long run.

Try the 17T and let us know what happens.

Well maybe a bit of good news here. I put two packs through this afternoon after flipping the ESC so that the plate was facing out and flew 4:30 minutes with no shutdown. I ran the first pack at 80% goverened on idle 2 and 75% goverened at idle 1 to see if that made any difference, which it did not seem to. Highest ESC temp was 124F right on the plate after the second flight (5 min cooldown between) with an ambient temp of 67F. Bottom line is flipping the ESC so far is looking good but I also have a heatsink ready to go if needed as Northern California can regularly get into the 90-100F in the summer. I also went back and reviewed Bob's electronics placement video and he installed it label side out as well so I wonder if he's had any issues yet. Most likely not though since he's running 500mm blades and the A40-10L.

Good news to hear that turning the ESC has done the trick. Unfortunately I can't go flying this weekend but I'll let you all know if it solves the problem for me too. Did you used double sided tape on the esc or plastic ties or both?

Thanks again for the good news.

Got this reply from an email I sent to Kontronik.....rather dissapointing seeing that my local hobby shop in Australia recommended it.

"The Jazz55-6-18 is much too small for a 1300kv Motor at 6s Lipos. The BEC can't provide enough power for 4 Digital Servos too. Please attach an aditional RX-Battery. It would be better to replace the Jazz55-6-18 with our brand new Jive80+LV (80A const. current 5A/15A BEC unit).

Best regards
Sebastian Hussels

Sorry to hear that man. You should demand that your LHS exchange the 55 for an 80 and throw in an adequate BEC as well. I believe the price difference would be close to equal since the 55 runs more than the 80.

On a side note. So far so good with flipping mine over. Flew 12 batteries this weekend in 75F temps and not a single shutdown and flying harder than before as I get more confident with this heli. Temps on the plate were 115F so things are definately cooler and happier.

I'm still going to flip my ESC and see what happens.

Big Fil, sent my LHS an email with a copy of that sent to me by Kontronik - now he has his hands pointing in different directions - what do you think that means?!

Does anyone know where to get a JIVE80+LV? Price?

Email from Kontronik this morning...

"Jive delivery started two weeks ago. Please contact your dealer to get one. ProgCARD II is available too."

Haven't been able to find one yet though.

So let's both keep looking and let everyone know when we find something - I don't know about you but I'm keen to see how the Jive delivers.

To put that into perspective. That ESC is almost as much as the 5003D kit. Wonder if it will be that much when brought in through a US distributor. Glad I didn't wait for one if that's the case.

Saw that the Jive can handle twice the rated current if cooled properly

The heat sink, which is the second new characteristic of the JIVE automatic controllers, is remarkable. This cooling plate is optimally connected with the achievement construction units, provides for a good heat dissipation and makes the easy realization possible of additional cooling possibilities. By the additional installation of an air or a water cooling let yourself the efficiency of your JIVE of automatic controller increase clearly.
The designation 80+ is called thus: at least 80 A.
Good cooling makes possible up to double achievement.

So the Jive 80 would easily handle most apps even if you need to cool it a bit and at
$224 Euro = $384 Aus it's almost getting cheap enough

Any news on when the HV is coming?

I understand that it's the cream of the crop.... but I think I will just put a heatsink on my Jazz 55 and live happy.

I was told from Mike of Kontronik that the HV series still will be in May and no earlier :(. At any rate, I myself do have high hopes for them as I will need something to handle the heat as well as able to handle the larger amps before Ircha Jamboree!:YeaBaby:

Here is a JIVE data sheet.

Lets hope the price comes down as the popularity of this device increases.

So this weekend I flipped the ESC from label facing outward to label facing inward........AND IT WORKED A TREAT - it was a sunny, 27 degree day with the canopy on.

I wish all problems could be solved so easily - thanks to all you guys for your help. I really thought I had done my money on the Jazz 55-8-16 but once it had the heat sink facing outward it worked flawlessly. So no Jive80 for me at this stage - happy savings.

Also replaced the pinion with 17 tooth and am now getting 2,146 rpm at 70% (0 degrees pitch) perfectly governed.

Just to be safe I went back to Mode 1 to reset the ESC and then back to Mode 4. Also now running a 4.8V receiver pack in parallel with the BEC.

So after thinking I had a real BIG problem, I'm back in business.

Thanks again guys.
