View Full Version : Tail steady in forward flight...but...

OK, I've got my Hurricane dialed in pretty good, she's a great flyer, but when I'm doing any kind of backwards flying the tail always kicks and does a 180.:arggg: I've followed Finless' vids, but whatever I do it's just not holding in backwards flight.
My setup is:
EP 550
Plastic frame
TREX 600 boom and tail system
GY401 gyro
DS821s on cyclic and rudder
RCP 1100kV brushless outrunner
GAUI 50A ESC
RCP 500mm main blades
3A voltage regulator
2 X 3S Lightning Power 2200mAh lipos
I'm running at 2000+ headspeed.
Do I need a better gyro or tail servo? BTW she stops on a dime when I'm doing piros, but just won't hold during backwards flight.
What do you guys think? Anyone else having this problem? Any ideas for a solution?

How much head speed do you use?

The 401 Gyro is plenty good but I personally wouldn't use the 821 for tail, too slow.
Speed:.19 sec/60° @ 4.8v, .15 sec/60° @ 6v

Klaus-
I'm running around 2000 rpm maybe a bit higher(tached). It should be close to 2200 but I don't think the GAUI 50A ESC is able to handle the current draw needed for that HS.
VicRC-
Yeah I don't think the servo is fast enough, but it should hold though right? Maybe I need a higher torque servo? I'll see about getting another tail servo.
Thanks guys

Torque is not important, speed is. Your tail can bop back and forth faster than a slow servo correct for the movement. The faster the better.

Try moving the tail connection out further on the servo wheel...it will make it faster to react.

I did, it's out the furthest it can go on the arm. That improved it, but it's just not holding. I think I'll just get a new servo next month. Any suggestions for a high speed/torque servo? Preferably lower cost, say around the $70-$90 range. It should work good with a 401 and also a Spartan, which I plan to put in the Hurricane later on, so my Trex 450 can have it's gyro back, lol.

9254 is the best combo for the 401 and will work well with the Spartan as well
Just dont forget the voltage regulator
If the 9254 is a bit pricey there are some interesting Servos available from Hyperion Atlas series the spec suggests they will perform well but i have heard of no actual field reports as yet
If they work well then the prices are very good

Thanks for the info Ben! I'll look into the 9254 for my rudders.

Check out this page http://media.hyperion.hk/dn/at-ser/atservo.htm
and download the servo specs its the HP-DS20GMD that sounds most interesting and its about 1/3 the price of a 9254!! it runs of 6v so no need for regulator
specs are
Weight : 49g
Speed 4.8V/6.0V : 0.07 / 0.05 sec - 60 deg
Dynamic Torque 4.8V/6.0V : 1.6kg / 2.0kg
Holding Torque 4.8V/6.0V : 3.2kg / 4.0kg
Dimensions : 40.0 x 19.5 x 37.80mm
Gear Train Primary Material : METAL GEAR
Bearing : Double Ball
Recommended for high performance 30-90 sized helicopters and large aerobatic planes.
Looks pretty good to me i think i will get one to try it out as my tail servo is also Junk
Will probably pick one up from Singapore Skyhobbies in about a weeks time

I will let you know how it goes when i recieve it
