ok then, nice weather today and yeasterday, made a few flights from which 2 with the datalogger
got around to almost all the moves I can do, Loops, rolls, punchouts, flips as well stationary as in FF
flight time 4 minutes but thats on the safe side, can fly 4:30 so no increase compared
to the stock 890 KV Gaui motor, only a heck of a lot more power...
Headspeed is also visible in the datalogfile, love this motor,
First datalog is with 515 MAH Blades,
Second log is with 500 RCP blades (short flight due to some rain)

those are great results wutangcl :glasses2:, but i think you are in need of a good govenor as the headspeed drops are quite pronounced. i'm waiting on mpjet 3.5mm connectors to arrive from atlanta hobby to get my bnb dpr100 wired up to use so i can get some inflight data but having flown it now i know the motor is a great performer, i just need the flight logs to prove it :D

Awesome WuTang! This is on 8sA123 and at what transmission gears are you using? I only get a safe 3 min with Z30, 14t,42t,61t and 20t-OWB, put back 2100-2200 on average.

Yeah I think so to I need a real good ESC with Governer, but for now it suffises
As for my transmissions:
- Pinion 19T
- 1e gear 68T
- OWB 19T
- Main gear 61T
8S A123's after 4 minutes putting back 1850 to 1900 mAh

What will I need to start logging my flights?

Hi Vicrc,
Depends on what ya want to log, if you want to log the same as me,
- Datalogger (http://www.hobbycity.com/hobbycity/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=4575)
- Brushless Motor RPM Sensor (http://www.hobbycity.com/hobbycity/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=4635)

I want to provide the same info as your doing now, thanks will look for them. Perfect! looks like I will add some lipos to my order...

Vicrc...
Consider getting the display panel also....it's about $35...Ithink I got my whole set up from Tower Hobbies.... But the Heli dealers carry them also....
I just leave it mounted on the side of the heli...and you can see mah taken out of the batts..... it's like having an on-board fuel gauge.
I am spoiled and don't want to fly without it.....then you can doanload the data when you get home and replay the flight.

Any guys got more reports on this motor? I'm not liking my Gaui so curious how the Scorpion compares to the Z20? I got the 2221-8 for my 450 and very pleased with it.

Any updates? Would be interested too... especially flight times.

I think this one would probably be the best fit for the 550: Scorpion 3032-8 (http://www.innov8tivedesigns.com/product_info.php?cPath=21_25_38&products_id=81) If I get a chence, I might try one.

Look at these...the one you mentioned doesn't look like it has a fan and is made just for helis.
These are suppossed to made just for the 500 class helis

I'm just wondering if 1000 kva is enough or go for the 1210 KVA.

:-( just ordered my Z-20A motor. My Scorpion on the Trex runs so nicely would really be nice to get some comparisons for 550 motors.

mjdee14 - I think you may be right. I actually like this one, Scorpion HK-3026-1000 (http://www.innov8tivedesigns.com/product_info.php?cPath=21_25_65&products_id=340) better. The problem with the higher kV motors is getting the gearing right to keep the head speed down. Look at ReadyHeli Headspeed Calc (http://www.readyheli.com/Online_Headspeed_Calculator_s/81.htm). With a 1200kV motor and a 12T pinion you're looking at a 2200+ headspeed. With the 1000 you're at 2000 rpm with a 13T pinion.
I wouldn't run the headspeed on this heli much over 2000 without the Finless TR mod. I'm still messing with my throttle curves and my rpm picks up a lot when I add power. I'm at 2000rpm at mid stick and 65% power. I jumped on the power last night in a maneuver and I had the tail lock. I have the 1100kV upgrade motor and I'm running 21/68 gearing. I haven't put in the 20T OWB yet, but when I do I will drop a tooth on the pinion.
The 1000kV motor with a 21T pinion and the 20T OWB would be about perfect.

Mike...
I'm leaning with you on the 1000kv motor....I would think it would give more punch than the Z20 but still be a little easier on the mAh compared to the higher KV motors.
I really like the Z20 but just wish it had a little more oomph to it. It's great as long as you don't try to hold high collective too long, the rpms start to deteriorate.
I wish someone would do good comparison...the price is right...I might just have to buy one myself.

Yeah - the price is pretty good. I'm easily getting 5:30 with the 1500W/1100kV motor in normal flight mode with 3200mAh batts. Might be able to get another minute out of the heli this way without much performance loss.

Well I broke down and ordered the Scorpion HK-3026-1000. I hope it gives me more time with 8sA123 than the Z30 I am using.

i emailed innovativedesigns and they said the 1000 is more powerful than the z20 but still runs efficient enough to use 2200mah packs... has anybody tried this one?

I too ordered the HK-3026-1210 last week, and got to fly it for the first time this afternoon. A bit hard to compare to my previous RCP 35/24/11 though.
With the RCP, I used the governor at about 2600 rpm, and flew for 5:30 on my 3700 packs, usually putting back in about 3000.
I installed the Scorpion, but hadn't had a chance to set the governor so just used a 100-95-100 throttle curve. It was also my first full flight with the new SK-360 flybarless system. I set my timer for 5:00 (just in case) and probably flew a bit easier than normal trying to get the fell for the new setup. I just recharged my battery, and it only took 1500 MAH!!!!! WOW!
I wish I could have confirmed that on my second pack, but had a mechanical failure during spool up which lead to a spectacular crash. :arggg: It'll probably be a week before I have the parts and am flying again. :(
Flight wise, I seemed to have just as much pop as before, if not more (though that could be attributed to the flybarless system). Even though I was taking it relatively easy, that works out to 10:00 of easy sport flying on my 3700's!!!
Hopefully that pans out once I'm done setting everything up.

well I broke down and couldn't wait, I orderd the 1000kv today. this will be for my 8s A123 Rotorworkz Hurry. I will be replacing my RCP h/18 and I am hoping It will gear better to gain more power and more flight time. will let you all know next week!

I was kicking the idea around today of replacing the Gaui upgrade motor with w Scorpion. I was toying with the 1000kV, but the 1210kV works out a little better on the headspeed calculator. I've got gearing I can use for 2100 to 2400 rpm headspeed.

Hi!
Nice to see some (coming) real world experiences! I'm thinking about exchanging my 1100kV 1,5kW Gaui motor too. I think a 1210kV or a 1000kV Scorpion would be the right thing. Max continuous power of a 1400kV sounds interesting too :)

I just want more flight time, the z30 is great but I am going back to learning the basic of inverted flights and woodies just in case. I tried gearing down the Z30 but still uses too much juice, I hope the scorpion will be better, I would be happy at 2000 rpms and extremely happy with 10min flight with 3300s packs.

So, just go for the Z20 1470KV !
I run it with 6S 3300mA, 500mm Carbon blades, 13T/61T gears.
For soft flying I get 1800RPM at 70% throttle, and I get a 14 min flight !
It is just perfect for the beginner that I am !

Wow! 14mins on 3300mAh, this is great!
Can I know your flying style?
